weak turbo power,sluggish take off
hello, my friend has an rx7 turbo that he has just bought. it runs fine, but it just doesnt seem to have the umpph on take off that i would expect on a turbo. i used to own a 86, and 87 na seven, and i swear both of those cars pulled better off the line than my friends turbo. all the mags claim 0-60 in approx. 6 sec or so.
it takes his turbo roughly a good 3 sec to kick in, and then its gradual, not a kick in the pants feel. as i accelerate from a stop, it feels sluggish as if im driving a econo 100 hp honda then the turbo kicks in and it speeds up better, but still gradualy.so it is defintaly not doing it in 6 sec. it seems to do fine at hiwayspeeds though.
so , is that a sing that the turbo is starting to go?
or could there be a air leak, or a vacume leak or something easy to fix.
or is that how they are?
could you please also tell me what other sings to look for if the turbo is going out, noises ect.
and other problems that may be the culprit
thanks.
oh yea, it is a 88 or 89 turbo 2 if that helps

Ya, the 89-92's have 200 poneys stock, so it should be dusting the **** of any stock port NA.
Scott89t2 said it best. Gut those cats(don't think you'll hit fuel cut), pull off the turbo inlet duct and check the compressor for movement. get a aftermarket boost gauge and see what your hitting.
Good luck

Gut the cats for a quick fix. Do this only if you plan on getting an upgraded exhaust. I went from gutted cats to a full 3" exhaust. It's incredible how poorly the stock setup flows even when unplugged. First get a good aftermarket boost gauge (most brands are good) so you know exactly what you are boosting. A FCD should be the next buy. Gutting the cats won't make the car overboost, but it's good to be safe. Good luck.
