Driveshaft U-Joint problems-Need a new one.

A while ago my mechanic told me I needed a new driveshaft/u-joints. Since it only squeeked a little I didn't worry too much about it. Yesterday I had to make a road trip and today the driveshaft seems to rattle a bit when I get up to around 3000rpms in 2nd gear.

So, I believe I need a new driveshaft/u-joints. What is the potential for upgrades and does anyone out there know an especially good source to buy one of these from?

Go to Mazdatrix. They have them for sale and they come with replaceable u-joints, something that our cars don't have.
Back with my last RX, I needed a u-joint fix real bad, so I just went to a junk yard and found a driveshaft in real good shape for like $20. But I'm looking at the Mazdatrix ones for this car in case my u-joints go bad.

I had mine rebuilt at a local large trucking place. They took it and within about 3 days before it was done. Works great and is much stronger (as to what I'm told). I beleive it was about $275 with a lifetime warranty.

The stock u-joints are replaceable with some work. If you search for "u-joint" you should find it.

I broke mine too. I had a new one made at a local drive shaft shop. It was the same price as Mazdatrix but no shipping. They wouldn't touch the old one to repair. Said it can't be done. IceMark told me he has heard of it being done but I would stick with a new one.

It's a shame you didn't just get a hold of me, I have a supplier for OEM replacement U-joints.

Before I get another round of "they can't be replaced" posts, contact some of the guys who DID buy them and they worked.

I will give the 1-800 number to the business here in Michigan that will sell them and ship them out via UPS. Last I checked they were somewhere in the $15-20 per U-joint price range.

Rockford is way to go . $50 and mine are as good as new. The guy at Rockford is real helpful as well. You can replce the u-joints with his help. The U-J were $40 and $10 for shipping.

Rockford is finally selling them online themselves..........took long enough. I had a supplier here in Michigan that sold Rockford's U-joints. Last time I went to their site, it was far from functional.

Now I know where I can order a replacement for my rear U-joint. It is finally going out. 192k miles on the OEM, not too shabby.

Talked to the mechanic this morning. He said the driveshaft basicly just blew apart. He was asking what I was doing at the time. ...well I was putt'in along at about 20mph. But anyways, he said he found a used one for like $220 but I found a brand new heavy duty one at http://www.thrashdriveshaft.com.

:: MAZDA RX-7 – Price is $239 with UPS Ground shipping. No core charge.* We will upgrade this Driveshaft to a Heavy Duty Replaceable 7260 U-Joint at No Charge. Stronger than OEM!::

Mechanic said there'd be about 2 hours labor = $100

Around $339 total.

2 hours of labor? to change out a rear transmission seal, bushing and bolt on a driveshaft on?

Man, you gotta go buy some tools and save some money.

AMEN!!, Gott'r done today. Good thing, I'm tired of riding my mountain bike 6 mile to and from work. Being 35 degrees with a cold north wind doesn't help, damn I'm glad the car is done.

Labor was $103, drives better than I ever remember it. Can't believe how much power I was loosing because of the old driveshaft/ujoints.

I'd do some of this work myself but I learned anything to do with this car is better done by a professional with the right tools rather than myself. I just don't want to screw up anything because I didn't know what I was doing.

Cars been doing great.

Car has been driving great. Got the receipt from ThrashDriveShaft and they took off $20 for no reason. Pretty nice of them.

Can't believe how much power I was loosing because I couldn't floor it before. Runs great now.

The car has been driving great. One thing I notice is that it feels like there's a heavier drive shaft down there. Just a little different feel.
