if your just talking about taking an old worn driveshaft off and putting a better condition one on then i would say its gonna take you about 20 minutes.......i mean all you have to do is take the 4 bolts off the rear end of the driveshaft and slip it out. nothing to it. hope that helps. peace -mike

Drain the transmission fluid first, or be ready to catch it.

shifter popped out? what do you mean? if your shifter is moved over then the only thing i can figure is you have busted tranny and/or engine mounts as well. if you mean the shifter itself doesn't want to go back into the tranny then you probably pulled it out while the tranny was in a gear so you have to wiggle it around to the right spot to get it back in.

oh and if you are worried about losing your tranny fluid, jack up the car from the back so the tranny is tilted forward and doesn't leak out on you.

Changing the driveshaft was one of the quickest and easiest things I've done on my car.

jack up the car
Lower the exhaust (in your case it may not be necassary)
remove heat shields
remove four bolts and slide DS out. The fluid may come out anyway
B4 re-installing, replace that seal on the tranny.

here is a better pic of the shifter housing if you look carefully you can see where the shaft has come undone

Dude, swapping out a tranny should take an average joe about an hour providing everything goes smooth. BUT, since it never does, a good afternoon with all tools needed should be all it'll take.
