Driveshaft

I have an 89 non turbo. Only problem now is I need a new driveshaft and I'm really not willing to pay $300.00 for a new one. I was just wondering if anyone knew what years are compatable with in 89.

As long as it is the same config (like NA manual drive shaft replaing a NA manual, or Turbo manual drive shaft to a turbo manual) you should be able to use one.

The 2Gen driveshaft is poorly designed. They all bind up after a while, and you cannot rebuild them. You could replace your driveshaft with one from another car like Icemark said, but I don't think that you will be able to find a good one at the salvage yard. I think that your best bet is to get a rebuildable driveshaft from Mazdatrix. It won't last any longer than a new driveshaft from Mazda, but at least you can rebuild it, and it is less expensive.

Ok, thanks everyone for the input. I talked to Ari at Rotary Performance and he explained everything I needed to know. I found one at an all mazda salvage yard that is in very good condition. Just to let ya'll know, if you cannot find any parts at a boneyard, this place probably has it. They are located in Cali. so there is shipping.

Actually you can rebiuld them, any competent driveshaft shop can press out the staked u-joints, remachine the cups and install new joints for usually less than 200 bucks, and as a bonus, if they use the right joints, its fully greasable afterwards to.. I had mine done on my 87GX, and Roshambo had his done at the same place, his was a little more cash as he did not have the means to pull the driveshaft off at work, I did the cash and carry thing with mine.. I am not sure what Mazda charges for a new shaft in the US, but in Canada its around the 600 dollar mark, rebiulding it was alot more reasonable, plus who's to say how long a used shaft is gonna last you.. The money is better spent getting it rebiult, if your driveshaft shop is anything like the one we went to, you get a full years warranty on the shaft..
Once the shaft has been machined for the new joints, you can replace the u joints yourself when they go again, as the new ones are held in via conventional snap rings.. Max
