Drive shaft play, is that bad?

I've had my 88 vert for about three years. I've put in a new engine and suspension all around. I'm putting a supercharger on it with in a few months. I've asked everyone. One, will my transmission and rear end handle the torque? Two, there is some slack in my drive shaft. In gear I can turn it about a 1/2 inch either way out of gear it turns about an inch. Is this normal?

With that much backlash, I am assuming you have a high mileage NA.

Sooner or later you will want to beef up the driveline.
For sure when the supercharger goes in.
Start shopping.

I've always had a little backlash in mine, 1/2", maybe...1", sounds excessive, but I can't remember how I checked mine (probably in neutral, though)...
