drifting w/o ps

is it do-able? if the power steering is disables, how much of a hassle would drifting be?

i dont know, going from non p/s rack to a p/s rack, when the p/s is not working its harder to turn than one that doesnt have p/s at all, but drifting should be about the same, the p/s has less turns from lock to lock, 2.7 compared to 3.5 for non p/s, but other than that, i would think it would be just as easy.

drifting = better without PS.

Lots more road feedback. It doesn't do anything for the feel of the rear wheels, but it's much easier to tell what is happening up front (you can tell when the front wheels are losing or gaining traction from the vibrations and ease at which the wheel turns).

There is almost no steering resistance during driftin (you won't notice it, anyway), so it only gets better with manual steering.

It's a little bit harder because the steering isn't as quick so it's a little harder to catch. But it's nothing crazy hard or anything. I'm talking serious drifting...not just powersliding or oversteer out of a corner either .

you prolly wont notice any change w/o the p/s. my T2 has no p/s and it drives great, i cant tell theres no p/s when its moving. i actualy like it a little better for fast driving, theres more feedback through the wheel and its more sensitive to inputs. but my car was never equipped with p/s. just disabling the pump will act differently. youre moving the fluid in the rack as you turn the wheel. but you prolly still wont notice anything, especialy while drifting. my freind cut the p/s belt on his corolla and he still slid like a **** with that setup. he didnt seem to be bothered by it. just see how it affects your cars handling and adapt to it.

Where I drift, there are bumps on the road... If I had no PS, like on my previous car, my thumb would have snapped from the steering reacting to those bumps... I don't like to sacrifice comfort/ease of steering for slightly more feedback, so I stay with PS for drifting...

dude no way just try your car without ir trust me you will like it. and dont just cut the belt if you do that then you are pushing fluid + the wheel so it makes it much harder. take the pump off and plug the holes with screws on the rack. no power stearing is not going to Hurt your thumbs trust me if your into handeling in your car your car should not have power stearing no sports car at that should have power stearing mazda put it as an option for those who nuy sports car but dont really use them to there true purpous.

No p/s is great for everything but drift IMO. The road feel is better when gripping but when drifting a huge amount of load builds on the wheel and you need literally hands of steel to keep the it under control. I have a manual rack.

I dunno where you drift at, but roads I do, aren't smooth as hell. My friend has a TII with a manual rack, and it's stil heavier than my 1st gen w/ no PS. The 1st gen steering was great, except if I hit a bump, my steering would toss my hands off the wheel

I have to disagree that no sports car should come with PS. I further more go as far as to say that NO sports car...hell even a sporty car should not come with a steering ratio that has 3 turns (or more) lock to lock. Steering should be quite quick, but not too darty...PS is a great thing.

i like my p/s pump removed while still useing the p/s rack. its quick to turn, and not all that heavy. drifting isnt really affected.

I drift a 1st Gen with no PS and it's a PITA with race tires on. It depends on your tires and how good you are. It's easy if you anticipate things, but it's almost impossible to pull yourself out of trouble if you get to far out because you can't turn the wheel fast enough. Personally, just go out and do it. You'll eventually get used to it or strong enough that it won't matter.

What??? How can you have controll with a 4 wheel drift? I mean that would just be a powerslide. A drift is counterstering to go around a corner, your front tires shouldnt loose too much traction or your screwed.

ive drifted several cars with no P/S. it DOES NOT hurt the cars behavior. it takes no more force to control the wheel when sideways than it does if your straight.

and a 4 wheel drift is when the car is at its absolute limits coming through/out of a corner. the car keeps its line as it accelerates but has broken traction. if you 4 wheel drift through a corner, then youve pretty much taken the corner as fast as you can.

You should ALWAYS hold the steering wheel correctly w/ your thumbs OUT! That is part of learning performance driving- like heel/toe downshifting, etc.

-edit- can't spell

i dont see why not, once your moving you dont really have to worry about using to much arm strenght.

the way that the pro drifters whip the cars around at low speeds, I'd have to recommend that you keep PS. I took it out, and while I personally like it, sometimes I'll hit a big bump and the wheel will jerk around pretty violently. not what you want happening mid drift.
