Door panels

Well, so far I've seen a couple different types of door panels, and I'm wondering if there's anymore out there. I've been looking for a new set to replace mine, and wanna know what different types there are. I'm looking to see if you guys can take pictures of what door panel type you have. I guess I'll start with the ones I've got. S4 grey leather panels here. I think these are the perforated leather ones....

I know Icemark, don't rub it in. Previous owner had a sony component system in there, and let's say he didn't install it in the neatest of fashions. Believe me, this looks tons better than what it used to. At least it sounds freakin' good, I can tell you that. Anyone else got pictures of their panels? I need some help here!

You can EASILY recover that if you desire. I did my drivers door in about an hour or two at work the other day, looks GREAT. All you have to do it pop the door panel off and unscrew that portion and rip off the fabric and recover it, its very simple. As far as I've seen, all the door panels look the same, except change color from gray to red or black and i think blue. Verts have cutouts for speaks and coupes don't.

Yea, I remember reading the verts had a 6 speaker system, so I figured they had to be in the door panels. I found out that the S5 door panels are different than the S4 ones. Also, for some reason, I see a lot of door panels that have carpet on the bottom and leather on the top, but for some reason, mine's got leather or both parts. Did the carpet only come on the S5 panels? It seems the only difference between S5 and S4 door panels is that the S5 ones have that triangle piece for speakers on the end of the near the storage area. But other than that, S4 and S5 door panels seem relatively the same. Also, what's this I see that some of the panels have a wrinkled leather, and others have the smooth leather, like mine? Fill me in here guys.

Ok, I get it now. The S5 panels had the wrinkled leather on top, but no leather on the bottom and speaker mounts. Any clue how big of a speaker you can fit in those S5 panels? It seems like I'm gonna like the S4 panels better because of the ability to fit a bigger speaker down on the lower part of the door panel, not to mention they got the leather on the bottom too. Do you guys know if there's any place I might be able to take my panels to and get the leather redone in black or something? Looks like I'll be sticking with my grey leather panels.

So now that I've seen the differences, it's a hard choice whether to stick with the S4 or get the S5 style. I'm guessing the 10th AE door panels were S5 black leather style and not S4 style? Also, how big of a speaker can you put in that hole on the S5 door panel?

That's the main reason I like the S4 door panels is because you can fit one hell of a speaker in there. IMO, the door panel is the only good place to put a speaker on the RX-7 because the ones under the dash don't do jack. I'm leaning more towards the S4 style. Also, I've been debating whether to go black interior or keep my grey and I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the grey because black seems too overdone now-adays. I think a white FC with the dark grey interior looks pretty good. Anyways, just my opinion.

My under dash speakers sounded really good, they high frequencies where muffled but some properly mounted tweeters would fix that, they never distort or anything i love them, then something fried last week now i'm stereo-less, i miss it bad

Oops....You probably wanted to see the front of the door panel:

They are not in too good a shape, but when I get it back on the road I can fix them up.

Alright, sweet. I wanted to see how they mounted the vert door speakers in there. I wonder, is there any way I could get that mounting grill by purchasing it seperately or is it built into the door panel?

It appears to be built in to it. I tried pulling it off one and cracked it.

Speaker Grill Mounting

There is a metal mounting plate fastened to the back of the door panel (photo below):

When you remove the four screws at the corners, the grill comes right off (photo below):

So I got a question then, how do the speakers mount behind that grill on the vert panels? Also, what size speakers are made to fit them? 4 inch? Maybe I could end up using those grills instead of the ones that are in my door panel now. Also, I see how they made the S5 panels with the leather and stuff. Thanks for the pictures and the help guys.

I believe they are 5 1/4" speakers. It has been a while since I replaced mine...

Yeah they should be 5 1/4 the 4inch ones go up under the dash. I mounted my 6 1/2s as far forward as i could in the map pockets they stick about half in and half out of them about 4" from the front of the door. It did require some metal cutting though

Vert Door Speakers

The speakers mount to the door and the grill mounts to the door panel:

I'm not sure how they measure speakers, but this can speak for itself:

See, the problem I had when I was putting my speakers in there was that I couldn't mount them to the door metal because the magnet on the speakers was too big. I ended up mounting them to the door panel and they just barely fit in there without hitting the window glass. I should check around to see if anyone has the a pair of those vert grills though... they would look better than my setup I'm sure. Any clue what the maximum mounting depth is you can use for the speakers?

Speaker Clearance

Sorry, I don't know. I haven't taken mine out (and hope I don't have to). I am having a passenger side window problem right now (thats why the door panel was off) and if I have to remove it, I'll take a measurement.
