Angry Door panel Screws!

Well just as my luck would have it. Before I went away to college this year I was resealing the inside of my doors just between the panel and the actual door. Anyways, i got rushed for time and ended up just leaving the doors half taken apart with all the screws sitting in a labeled jar on a shelf. Well i get back after a tough semester only to see the jar lying on the garage floor smashed to smitherines and no screws in site. CRAP! So, i went to the mazda dealership, who gave me abosolutely NO help, then went to a autowrecker who in turn told me i'd have to buy the entire pannels if i wanted the screws to go with them, which is understandable i guess. SO, i'm in a bit of a bind here. Does anyone know the exact screw's that go in an 87 GXL door pannel? PLZ help I'm "screwed"!

are you talking about the four that go through the armrest area? they are about 2.5 inches long IIRC. just go to your local hardware store, bring the seven, ask them if you can go try some, if they say no, buy a couple sizes and see what works by testing them in the door.

Sounds like theres a ghost in your garage..

Find a self service auto wreckers, common names include pick and pull, pick your part, etc. Pay fee and gain enterance. Find FC. Remove screws. Pocket screws. Leave premmisis. If you feel bad about it like i usually do, buy something small that you need like an interior bezel, or a solenoid you can allways find something you need.

That's the larger than pocket rule. If it's larger than your pocket, pay for it.

I've gone up there with small bits of plastic, screws, ignitors (12A), and radiator overflow bottle caps and they just laugh and tell me to get on out of there. They're more interested in selling big bits, not having to spend five minutes looking up odds and ends on their computers for a price.

Larger then pocket rule, I like that too, the honest approach is a good one too, bring up so many little bits that they just tell you to get lost!

As for some help with ordering the screws for the door:

Go to www.mazdaformance.com select the RX7 link at the top go to parts diagrams, find your car's year select "2 of 3 body" and flip the pages until you find the area of the door your looking for, either print out the page or write down the numbers and head back to the Mazda store!

Ah well thanks for the suggestions. I'm seriously considering the pocket trick. But then again the guy already said i couldn't have the screws unless I take the door pannels with me. SO, he going to be watching me for sure. I was sorta just hoping someone would know the exact specs on them.

There is a really good trick here that is a little too late for you to try, but it works for me. Tell the guys at the yard you need a "few small parts" and go of into the yard. Come back with about a dozen screws/clips/little things, and say "how much?" They'll just tell you to take them.

What bugs me is the yards I got to would rather sell the entire car for $50 of scrap then sell me a hood and engine for $50. That's a whole different story though.

Hey thanks Kai, i'll give that a go for sure. I'm actually just going to grab 1 of every screw i need. Then i can just walk into the hardware shop and say, "here i need a bunch of these".

just go for the gold and jack them all. buy something rediculous like an interior panel, and say all the screws go to it.
