Doing an oil change

Me and my son went to the big box auto parts store near us the oil filter they gave us is smaller than the one that is on it presently, is this going to be a problem?

Probably not. What's the part# and brand of the one they gave you. The ones for the Rx8 are smaller than the ones for our cars but do work. They may have consolidated all their Rx filters to that one. I've been using the '09 up Rx8 filter on my car. It's bigger than the earlier Rx8 filters but smaller than the one for the FC.

Curious what brand and part number you got.The sizes vary by manufacturer. I like to stick with Mazda filters but I will also use Wix, Purolator or Mahle brand filters.

I know you probably meant the O.P. but I'm using a Super Tech ST9688 which at one time was supposedly made by Wix for Walmart. The internal construction has changed so the manf. may have changed as well. It crosses to a Fram PH9688 but I refuse to use Fram. I liked Motocraft, or Purolator but Walmart doesn't carry Purolator anymore or the Motocraft filter anymore.

you dont have to buy oil filters at Walmart, I would actually think they may get less quality filters to be able to sell them cheaper

WIX are supposed to be good oil filters

I used the Mobil 1 extended filters but I thought I had read somewhere they changed them up.
I still have an old one on my shelf for my next oil change, also heard a lot of people using a subaru application oil filter but cannot confirm filter #

I know I'm just lazy and get what they have since I'm already there picking something else up. Saves having to make another stop at the parts store.

Lol wix filters. I've worked at dealerships for 7 years and have seen so many issues related to their fuel filters and not having the proper flow rate required. Check engines and diagnostics usually lead to filter replacement with oem that resolves customer concerns. Do you hate your local mazda dealership so much you can't spend a few extra bucks for an oem filter? My rule of thumb is filters and electronic parts oem, chassis part are wtf you want. Pony up, save the headache long term

Closest Mazda dealer to me is around 90 miles away. I've though about ordering a Denso from Rockauto though.

those guys who take the time to do extensive testing on various filters consistently rate WIX filters pretty high

I'm currently running a Wix fuel filter (Wix 33221) in my S5. It has been in my car since last April 2018 and I've had no issues.

I use Wix or Oem Filters typically. Both I feel are just fine. Ironically I use whatever is on sale for all my other rigs and oil is never the problem. (I typically use Wix & Napa for DDs).

I think the biggest thing for most is to change regularly and to check the oil so it's not ran low, etc. Take care of your oil and your car will do just fine.
