Does The Smell Get To You Guys w/o Emissions?

After reading this post, I started to think about the smell I would have after putting in a 3" Racing Beat downpipe and presilencer. I was wondering if the smell gets to bothering you after a while, and how bad it actually is.

I get used to it. even though i still have my cats on i have an exhaust leak between the manifold and the first cat, the exhaust makes it way into the car, if im at a long light or somthing my eyes will start to water, its soon to be fixed though with a header and presilencer that are on the way

It doesn't bother me unless I am standing behind the car while it is idling.

If your car makes you smell like hydrocarbons then I'd suggest it has serious problems. I've never experienced any more than the occasionally wiff, and only if stationary with the window down and the wind blowing in the right direction.

If you stand behind the car when it's idling you get what you deserve.

And my line about standing behind the car was sarcasm.

Anyone getting near my car gets that fair warning once...I've been in the hatch getting things while the car was warming up (richened up too) and my eyes try to tear...

Mine smelled so bad I ended up getting a hi-flow cat to replace my RB presilencer. My friend called me in my car in traffic a few days after I replaced the original cat with the presilencer and asked me if something was wrong with the car because everyone behind me was getting gassed out by the horrible smell. I dont intend on putting the presilencer back on now, I'll probably just end up selling it. Using the RB cat-back with a hi-flow cat instead of the presilencer, I get almost as good power (well, so it feels, I havent dyno'd it) without the smell or as much noise.

Doesnt bother me too much. It's the worst after pushing the car and having to stop at a light right after.

I sometimes load my music gear in the hatch while the car is warming up, and it is definitely enough to make your eyes water...can't be great on the lungs either.

its not bad unless your standing behind the car with your face up next to the muffler. you can smell it but i guess you just get used to it. i don't even notice it anymore. it used to bother me but only when i was sitting at a light for awhile.

I've never had a problem unless i was standing right behind the tailpipe. As far as drving, ive never smelled anything while sitting in traffic or during deacceleration. I'd think there was something wrong if anyone did.

driving with the sunroof open sucks it in and makes my eyes water but it isn't too bad. I had a guy tell me in traffic one time that my car smells. Hey if you run straight pipes you will have some stink.

I dunno what you guys are using for fuel over there, but I've never experienced a car with exhaust that could make your eyes water, and I've been around modified rotaries for years. If mine did that, I'd be looking for the problem...

Mine makes my eyes sting if i put my face beside the muffler. But i think its cause my ECU is chipped so it run rather rich.

Oh and i only use a minimumof 91 Octane for gas.

3rd gen owner

Many of these complaints can be adjusted out with programmable ecus. I run my 3rd gen with no odor issues, but I've spent a lot (many hours of logging and tuning) of time getting my fuel and timing just right at idle and under light load. Get a wolf 3d system for your second gens, tune it right, and you can really clean up the burn (timing can really affect the burn).

You'll also get a smoother running and more powerful car as a bonus.
