The noise bugs me alot more than the smell. I dont think I could live with it though if I had a vert.

A proper performance "chip" should make the engine run leaner than stock, not richer.

I'm sure my eyes would start to water if I stuck my face directly behind the mufflers. The exhaust pulses are pretty strong but it is only a slight odor inside the car. My car runs a little rich but it sounds like other people have exhaust leaks or something else wrong with their cars.

OK, to address the noise issue, you've gotta spend more money on a resonated midpipe and/or quieter muffler. My new t04s with resonated midpipe and racing cat back is actually quieter than it was with my hybrid twins - a nice mellow tone with my street port. However, I had to lay down coin. I'm sure Racing Beat makes something nice for your second gens (or some other vendor).

I also dump my wastegate into my downpipe, which makes a very cool Curly 'wooop-woop-wooop' sound in the cab but doesn't alert the entire county that I'm boosting.

Non-turbo lack the great muffling abilities of a turbo. Have you ever rode in a n/a rotary with a header and straight pipe? Im guessing no. And I have a glasspack and 2 mufflers to help keep it down.

So you are trying to tell me that when i am boosting that a "Proper" chip should make me run lean?! Hell no! I'd rather run rich then run lean and then have that giant "POP" sensation of the motor blowing into a million and one pieces of shrapnel!

Doesn't bother me, but any of my friends who have followed my car under high throttle bitch and moan that it stinks. I say to them get a faster car and pass me.

Nope, I have not

Well, crap, obviously I have not. Spent too much time on 3rd gens and guess I need to learn more about 2nd gens before piping up on the 2nd gen forum. The only fc I've been in recently was FATTYFC's turbo'd unit with dual blitz mufflers, and it's got a very nice tone.

I guess the answer is obvious ..... turbo the car! I know, I know, that's impractical and expensive if you don't already have a tII.

Earplugs are a cheap mod

Still think the smell issue can be addressed with a Wolf 3d unit and tuning, but the sound issue can only be stopped with the cat, or a super quiet restrictive muffler which defeats the purpose of the straight pipe to begin with.

Sorry fellas - but I LIKE the loud noise! Brap, brap, brap, whooosh.....

It will not make you run lean but will lean out the mixture more so you get more power. That is how people use SAFCs to get more power, leaning out to a safe level.

You need to learn a little more about how EFI works. If you modify an engine to the point where the stock ECU's fuel maps aren't injecting enough fuel to ensure safe mixtures, you need to change them so they do. Most of the time though, factory maps are very rich, and get richer with mods, resulting in less power than you'd get with leaner (but still safe) mixtures. A true performance chip would be making mixtures leaner to increase power, not make them richer.

Airflow mods usually require you to increase the amount of fuel that the fuel system can flow to match this, but the mixtures (a ratio remember, not a quantity) should still be leaner than the stock mixtures if you want the full potential of the mods. This can all be done while still leaving a safe margin against detonation.

It should also be noted that most so-called "performance" chips are a con and a complete waste of money.

Whilst my car doesn't make my eyes water when im in it, it does if im standing behind it...

But then again I have no emmions at all, a not so well tunned microtech, and running premix at a 100:1 ratio...

Edit: and a straight pipe with no cat.. It isn't _THAT_ loud.... I like it..
I might change that before it goes back on the road though.

It is certainly a different smell. I don't mind it I guess. Most of my passengers don't say much, they are too worried about finding some place to grab hold of

I have no cat on my fresh rebuild, granted I havn't drove it anywhere, but I have stood behind it at idle, and I can't even notice a smell.

I have a RB header and pre silencer with a custom 2.5" pipe and I Dynomax round muffler. I have removed all of the air friendly stuff.
But, I spent a lot of time tuning the car, and I only score something like 5.4 times the legal limit. So driving my car is like driving 5.4 emmisions legal cars to the air. This may sound bad, but my buddies slant 6 Ford pick up (with a cat) is 14 times the limit. Another buddies Camero is about 22.

My point is, I don't have that bad of a smell. even standing behind the car it isn't bad.

I have straight pipes (no cats) and sure it smells a little but rarely ever in the car, and NEVER enough to make my eyes water even when loading the car while its warming up.
