does a radiator cooling plate really work????

I need some help here, i have a 88 tii and it tends to over heat on the freeway, so i think that not enough air is hitting my radiator. I have a koyo rad and a fmic, but it never heats up on the street. i just got a undertray and wondering if the cooling plate to block the top part will help keep the air going to the rad.

Can't hurt...also make sure you have the foam between the rad an undertray to prevent some air from going around.

Honestly, with my FMIC setup (that has ducting o'plenty) I can take that thing off and leave it in the shop, beat the hell out of the car and temps will do nothing different then with it there. I know this from my infared thermometer on the oil cooler days before I sacked up and bought oil temp gauges. For me that piece is just something that cleans up the front of the bay.

Ducting plays a much larger role then a piece of sheetmetal that more or less does what the hood does once its shut.

Air is both lazy and crafty- it will always seek out and follow the path of least resistance- so the more shrouding, the better.
Also, seal the gaps around the Koyo and the body mounts with foam (just like the stock rad used to have).

yep air would rather go around your rad. than through it

I used garage door sealing foam from Home Depot...it's held up well for the past year and was cheap.

Why would it melt?
It's closed cell foam about 2" square- I think it comes in 12' lengths.
