Every Mazda rotary-powered car ever made has an oil cooler. There's no other way to cool the engine's internals.

true, all rx7's have an oil cooler... thats one more reason the rotary engine is not as lightweight as some guys think it is... especially considering how far forward the oil cooler sits in the rx7 chassis... ooops, sorry to wander off topic.

Maybe 20lbs full and wet... Like only 5 lbs dry.

And many high performance cars have oil coolers so owen is fat's comment of weight of it being a factor is down right silly.

Ahhh, so that the Vette with its big bad V8 has a oil cooler, does that mean instead of the engine weighing 450# it weighs #470....

same sort of mentality I guess.

A quart of oil is only like what 3-5lbs? If that OC is 5 dry it can't weigh more than 10-15lbs tops wet.

That guy's talking out of his ****!

Umm, if a quart of oil is 3-5 lbs, the the 5 quarts of oil in your car is going to weigh between 15 and 25lb, add the 5lb weight of the oil cooler, 20-30lb. Icemark was right.

5 quarts of oil only weighs about 10lbs I would guess.I am sure it doesn't weigh 20lbs. I got some used oil around back somewhere.Maybe I'll weigh it tomorrow. I also have an empty oil cooler maybe I'll weigh it too.

A quart of engine oil weighs ~1.9lb, so the specified 6.1qt it takes to fill a dry engine weighs less than 12lb. Bringing up the weight of the 0.85qt of oil in the oil cooler (1.6lb) is truely retarded...

i just remembered that an rx in the junkyard had the oil cooler bypassed, most likely leaking cooler, so im guessing thats why its in there, overheat, blown coolant seal etc. It appears to be stock so i was wondering if you guys would say get it, port it, experiment, rebuild and slap it in my car when my motor finally goes, and how much would it cost (range) for the longblock motor from the junkyard

p.s. both cars are s4 NA just in case of wondering

Thanks

That's just what's in the pan. Remember there's a big difference between a "dry" engine and what you get out during an oil change.
