It shouldn't affect the sniffer. If anything, it should help by reducing any misfires or incomplete burn cycles.

It will *probably* fail you on the visual, if they're strict, because it does affect the fuel/ignition system. I don't know if it's an approved device... probably not, since it does have a large effect on the operation of the ignition system.

No, in fact, the engine is supposed to burn CLEANER with the CDI box.
Unless the HI-6 is NOT working, it's not the problem.

i know its not an approved device, but i "think" it caused the RPM readings (atleast on that guy's timing lgiht) to go crazy, idling was on 3000+ then it jumped to 6000+ and going crazy

Yes, the multi-spark can confuse some high-end inductive timing guns.

Oh. Yea, if you're relying on one or two sparks per revolution and get 10-15, that will confuse things.

He'll need to tap into a pre-Crane ignition signal line to get a good reading. I don't know if emissions stations have that capability though. Is there a jumper inside the box to disable the multi-spark section and just use it as a straight CDI booster? I'm not sure if that would hurt emissions or not at low RPM - they use multiple sparks because a single really hot/short spark isn't as good as a cooler longer one for igniting the charge at low RPM.

Yes, there is a way to set the HI-6 to disable the multi-spark.
You change the "thumbwheels" to either "00" or "01", and this turns off the multi-spark.

As Icemark mentioned, the trailing coil includes a "test" connector which provides a timing signal output. Because many new cars are coil on plug (no ignition wire), most emissions machines can also read this signal. It's a little round plug, buried by the trailing coil. The wire that leads to it is yellow w/blue, as I recall.

The key is to find a good test only shop, that actually has a clue.

100% true.......call a rotary shop close to you and ask them who they use. Or come down to hawthorne, I personally know an awesome smog tech. He will do what ever he can to make it pass, It took 3 tries on my 97 S10 4X4 before I passed( non OBD2 CARB Cat) but after a 15 min @ 4000 rpm's the cat finally got hot enough to pass with flying colors!!!!!
