Do I need a thermostat?

I was wondering if I need a thermostat. Would not having one make your car run hotter possibly?(maybe the coolant moves TOO quickly and can not take away enough of the heat from the engine?) Also, has anyone tried running a smaller E-fan in front of the radiator?

My temps were very very very low until I added my fmic. Now they are still below 1/4 at night, but during the day they are right at 1/2 and I'd like them to be around 1/3 or so. Thanks.

You answered your question.

The collant won't travel slowly enough to absorb enough heat to cool the engine properly.

YOu cant run without a thermostat on the Highway. The water wont stay in the radiator long enough to cool. Thats the problem your experiencing now. The water has to stay in the radiator long enough to cool, then the thermostat exchanges it.

Thats what I thought, but wanted to have some confirmation before I made the worse. The previous owner had problems controlling the temps(its called replacing a leaky radiator and bad water pump ) so they took the thermo out to try and help. Well I'll be getting a MAZDA one tomorrow. Thanks.

ATTENTION:

The thermostat has a spring loaded disc that sits about an inch below the main valve.

It's job is to close a BYPASS port down in the pump housing.

If you absolutely have to run without a stat - plug that bypass hole!

Hey, I started that thread.

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=206619

It turned into a discussion about running no thermostat, Ryde, so you may want to check it out.

Lol, never had any cooling issues(still don't really) and never really thought about it too much until today. I wasn't the one that took it out.

Thanks for the info guys. Too bad I have to prepay to get one at the dealer though.
