do i need new struts?

every time i go over a speed bump (we have plenty of them here at school) the back of my car creaks like a sumbitch.
so i got out and pressed down on the body above the wheel well and it made the same creaking sound.

i've never bought struts before. how much do they cost?

Buy KYB AGXs from www.k2rd.com

They're $350 or so for a set of four. Not only is that an amazing price, but they'll tighten your handling up tremendously.

Take some WD-40 and spray over the rear wheels onto the top of struts...Works wonders. If the struts are still resilient why replace them. Now if the struts are shot, that's a different story.

Here is my advice to you.

Press down on your car. See if the car "bounces" excessively. If not, then your shocks are ok. If your shocks are noticeably worn, then it is time for new shocks.

Another way to tell, is to look at the outer treads on your tires. If each individual tread/groove is worn on both sides (looking at the side of your wheel), then it is a sign of "cupping". That is another way to tell that your shocks are worn.

I have heard good things about the AGXs. For $350, that is a REALLY good price.

I would suggest that you hold off on spending the $200 you have saved up. Save up for the AGXs. The AGXs have adjustable dampening.

Driving w/ bad or worn shocks will not kill your car (unless your car nosedives severly or bounces up and down when the brake is applied). It will be put more wear on your tires in the long run.

They have shitty customer service IMHO. Im sure if you called them you would get a better response/service. Just make sure they ship fedex or usps. UPS will **** you severely (probably 400$) with brokerage fees.

my tires are worn consistently slightly on the inside becausei have just a tad bit of camber and there is no cupping. the car does not bounce excessively so i guess my shocks are actually decent.

what could this low creaking noise be?

The creaking could be a whole number of things. From old bushings (from various suspension components) to vibration from your shock (as it is being rapidly compressed) to the shifting of loose body panels.

jduncan (james) was there in his 80. joe and i were at his house working on the cars. he's trying to get his fb up for the autox and i was doing an oil change and brake pad change on my girl's se. i didn't even realize there was a meet since i rarely go to louisville streets anymore. i haven't seen the 30 degree vert guy yet.

anyway, we'll be out there at ups saturday and sunday. feel free to stop by and hang out, race if you want. i have a feeling i'll be representing the 2nd gens.

Could be your upper shock mounts worn out. I know mine are and they make all kinds of noise. I have an advantage though. I just have to turn my head and look at it flopping around where you can't really do that. (no speaker basket sheet metal back there for me)

one way to tell if it is your shocks-----look at the shock in the wheel well.....if it looks like it is leaking down the side from the top then they are bad. quick and easy, and you dont even need to pull the tires off
