... but having them does keep the car exceptionally quiet.

If you replace the main cat with a straight pipe on an 86-88 rx-7, your auxillary intake ports will not open and you will lose power above 4k RPM.

ummmm.... you live in Huntington Beach CA.... Removing the cats might not be a strong idea.... Arn't there strict emission laws? You will have a hard time passing without a CAT.... Expecially when they take a look under the car looking for CATS.... You will need at least one.... Maybe look into a high flow.

removing cats will free up HP, unless it interferes with your aux ports like someone else said. But, you will fail smog. If you put a hi-flo one on, you will gain HP, lose weight, but there's still no guarantee to pass smog, especially if they make you cool your engine off before testing. The reason for the pre-cats on the RX-7 was for cold start mainly

go pass smog with 3 cats, then put on highflow cat(if won't work)
Put 2 restrictive cats on and pass smog, then switch two a highflow cat

Just set it up so you can interchange the pipes when needed.

Remove the cats and put a Bonez hi-flow on as a main cat. I passed CA smog with just a bonez hi-flow and a header. The guy didn't care about visual though, as long as it passed the sniffer.
