with poor traction both wheels could be made to spin regardless of if there was a LSD, however if there was a LSD, both tires would also spin- so if one spins and the other does not, then you do not have an LSD.

But if both tires spin, you may or may not have a LSD and just have poor traction.

But model and year will also be a big determining factor, as not many people retrofit a LSD into a car that didn't come with one.

Easy way to tell. Get under the car in the rear, look at the differential, if the fill plug has a Tag on it then it's an LSD, it says something about limited slip or whatever, can't remember. If there is no tag then you might have an open diff, or it (the tag) might have been lost at some point.

What model of rx7 do you have?

the only reason i made this thread was because i was messing around the other day and tried to drift. it was the first time i had tried it because i knew i didnt have lsd and just wanted to do it for fun. i hit the corner at high rpm, whip it and then down shift. ( i know thats not drifting its power sliding) i was F-ing around. but i notice i slid out pretty easy in the rear and i heard the wheels slipping. now i couldnt tell if it was both or just one thats y im askin. plus i read if you car came with certain features it might have lsd, i have those features. i just want to make sure so i dont buy an lsd when i already have one. thanks

90 rx7 gtu/gxl 5lugs. this should give it away but i just want to know for sure. thanks

If you can do a "dougnut" (360), then for sure you have an LSD.

i was wondering this too, because i have a 1989 GTU, but i also have 5 lug...
also my car DOESNT have a sunroof?
its so confusing, i thought the 89 gtu was the base of that year, so i should have 4 lug i thought

Only the GTUs came with a LSD in the S5's. (other than turbo). Oh, and there are no 4lug S5's. You do not have a LSD unless it was installed afterwards, which is unlikely.

Doing doughnuts is NOT a good indicator of a limited slip. Checking the tag on the rear is a good place to start...

Lift the rear of your car. With the E-brake off turn one of the rear wheels. If they rotate the SAME direction then you got LSD. If they rotate opposite directions you don't.

That's not very accurate, since with a viscous, it doesn't always lock up.

I think some of you need to stop taking LSD, and learn about the correct terminology and aspects of positraction. Watch the movie MY COUSIN VINNY, and Morisa Tomei will explain how it works. Limited, L, Slip, S, Differential, D, is exactly what is says. LIMITED. Put your rear end on jack stands, and hold the passenger side tire with a pair of channel locks, and put it in first and see what happens, that is of course, after taking some LSD.

As always, Ice-man, you got me. I guess that I will use a special ( ^ ) icon when the dog is joking around. It was a play on LSD. We all know that torque is a major factor in all LSD, whether it is clutch, viscous, locking or torsen. I put at the end, I hope you read all of my post, to research. I know that you are a rotary genius, but don't try to always top everyone on every aspect of vehicles. A dog might sneak up on you and bite you in the ***. I was stating to the fact that knowledge, even after "opinions" by others, will ultimately be your salvation. And research is how this is accomplished.

The s4's came with clutch LSD, the lifting up and rotating the tire, assured me that my GXL has it (i know it did anyway, but i'm not satisfied until i check for myself, you never know what the last owner has changed) though i'm sure my limited slip is quite worn out by now, i should get it rebuilt.

u have to buy lsd's and there are diffrent types of it. it bascily makes both wheels spin, and is commonly used in drifting. there is a 1-way type that will give u maximum traction on acceleration but no traction off the throttle. a 1.5 way allows max throtlte traction and some off the throttle. and a two way (which is most common) offers a full lock of traction on and off the throttle.

well check it, i have a 91 vert, now i know its open, but when i first burn out both tires spin, but after a second or two one stops and im just spinning one. especially noticed when i try to do a 360, about 180 of it is sideways and the rest is bagel style, weird to me. i have good tires too. i own a 83 supra that does donuts for days so i know its a full lsd, but ive also owned open diffs that never only sliped half the time

Well I have a vert. STock rear end.. My burnouts are always 2 wheeled. The only time I know only one wheel spins or spins alot faster than the other one, is while turning. But str8 accel, it grips like bitch, having big tires helps..

well i didnt mean to cause any trouble and im sorry if i did. i should have just been content with what i had and thats a rx7. i love this car and i only want whats best for it because its all i have. yesterday i came off a steep slope and F***ed up my stock lip (daym rookie driver me). most o fthe bolts are missing now and the lip is kinda hanging (does anyone know the bolt size so i can replace them and put my lip back together). i was so mad at myself, i felt like the car needed a new owner. its all good now.
i just want to state that i probably dont have LSD and thats fine with me becasue i want a torsen anyways (they last longer). also someone on this thread said that their clutch or visous LSD might be worn out and that they should get it fixed/repaired/rebuilt/i forget. you could "fix" it if its worn out?? hows this possible?
if clutch type or visious type are repairable then i would rather have that then a torsen because its cheaper. plus i heard clutch types are better they just wear out faster. and if thats the case then it would just be like changing the clutch but on the diff rite?
thanks for the repies.

visocuse LSD's do not need rebuilding/repairing, they are sealed lifetime units.

they just take a lot longer to engage

The only way you could damage one or burn it out is if you ran the differentail itself dry and overheated the whole assembly to the point of seizing.
