Do i have to buy a complete rebuild kit?

Do i have to buy a complete rebuild kit?

Im going to turbo swap my vert by August 1st but i want to put in a streetported 13b. I found a motor with 12k miles on it. My question is do i have to buy a rebuild kit if i tear down the motor or can i use most of the semi-new parts?

If you found a motor with 12k miles, I shouldn't think it would need a rebuild. Assuming those are 12k original miles that is.

If it's not, then you would, at a minimum, need all new soft seals.. The apex and side seals should be in decent shape.

just realized im left out the part where i will be street porting the irons and having the exhaust ports on the housings ported too while the engine is apart. The 12k miles are on an atkins rebuild.


Also is doing a streetport and exhaust porting job something i could do myself or should i send the stuff out to be done?

You can buy the templates to do it yourself but it's easy to screw up. You can always remove material but you can't add it. If it's your first port I'd take them to a machine shop or send them to someone who does it.

I might pick up some old/unusable irons to try a few ports on until i think i have it down pretty good.


I used to port the piston sleeves in my nitro rc engines and i did crank work on them too. The porting on them is very similar to the porting of these engines just much larger on a 13b

I ported my own exhaust ports, and had a more experience friend do the intake ports. For the exhaust ports I practiced on a junk rotor housing first and I bought a template from Pineapple Racing. read up about beveling exhaust ports

Beveling is key, if you dont bevel it properly your seals will get chewed up in no time. When you pull apart the motor spec all the seals, if they are within spec then no need to replace. But as others said you will need at least a soft seal kit. Also when you install the water jacket seals you need to make sure they are facing the right way and theres a part of it that needs to be aligned with a certain spot on the housing.(bad explanation but if you search you will know what i mean) Good luck with your build and take your time!
