Pretty sure that switch is only for some non-US markets (obviously including Canada). I think some trim levels of 1981-1983 Canadian market RX-7 cars had a similar setup. Canada got headlight washers on many of their RX-7s, going back to the FBs (very large, rubberized squirters mounted on the front bumpers). Some limited production models got headlight washers elsewhere as well; for instance, the 1988 10th Anniversary Edition cars had them here, just like the ones on your car.
Out of curiosity- is the fresh air switch a mechanical linkage that moves a flapper (like on an '84/5 RX-7), or is it electronic?
Neal.

I had both of those options on a Canadian model FC that I purchased years ago...It also had no A/C from the factory with a duct connecting the blower to the heater core where the a/c components would have been under the dash.
That switch is just to allow or disallow the door airvents to blow air at you when the heating or cooling system is on. You see one just like it on the Passanger side too.
Seen the headlight washers on all GXL's I've seen, and the door vent thingie on all FC's here. Just a mechanical flap to open or close the vents at the doors, and thereby forcing more air elsewhere.
Oh, and get some rubber on that clutch pedal. Wouldn't want your foot to slip in gear.

It's a mechanical switch, and on my car it certainly seems to not just block the air to the door vent. When driving along at speed with them open and the fan off there's quite a bit of airflow through them, much more than through any of the other vents that are selected as on at the time. Definetely a fresh air duct that connects the door vents directly to the outside air.
My FC doesn't have those headlight squirters. It also came without AC.

Holy s**t you mean US car's don't have the fresh air vents?
Poor yanks.
As stated, this mechanical switch simply allows outside air to be blown in through the door vent while driving at speed. WHen opend, no heater core sourced air can blow through that vent in the door, only outside air.
Its a beautiful feature that stems from the days when no A/C was available on cars. Many old cars/trucks had these systems.
And no, its not rare at all considering I have 5 FC's out back with it
Of course, I suppose its rare south of the border?
EDIT: and I didn't notice it the first time because it doesn't look out of place to me lol, its on all my 2nd gens

Well there's plenty of Canadians, so it's only natural that there's quite a few here.
It's just another reason why Canadian FC's are better. One big reason is that our S5's got manual seatbelts.

My FC came from Canada. I also have the fresh air switch, but I always thought that it was to close off those vents.
Now I know why that kid at the meet with the S5 said he was jealous of my manual seatbelts.
