DIY BOV help

I have all the pieces to install the do it yourself BOV, but I let someone borrow my haynes manual. What does the stock BOV look like and where is it located in the engine bay? Or could someone post a pic of the stock bov in the engine bay? Thats all I need to know I think.

The stock BOV is a black, round object about 2" in diameter located above the turbo between the TID and the intercooler pipe. It has 2 3/4" nipples on opposite sides of each other along with a vac nipple near the top.

here's a pic for ya... should help

You can see the brass Check Valve and the rubber hose. That goes back to the stock BOV (looks like it mounts with a few screws on the bottom). Stock, this would be turned the other way and like was said right before me, it's on the metal piece that connects the hose to the intercooler and the hose from the compressor side of the turbo. If you need other pics, let me know, I can take them ASAP and post them fairly quickly for ya. Also, you might notice you still have a vac leak with the Check Valve method, so what I did was tighten the spring to hold it shut better. Let me know if you've got questions

Ok, so basically you just unhook one side of the BOV that goes into the S-Shaped intake tubeing. Turn the whole BOV around 180 degrees, then attach the new valve to the open end of the BOV with a hose and you are done?

IMHO, if you're going to open-air vent your stock BOV, get a real BOV. Every one I've seen that has tried the check valve method has ended up with odd running problems - hesitation, stumbling, bucking, etc. After killing themselves trying to troubleshoot the problem, it turns out to be a selective vacuum leak from the Home Depot check valve. My roommate had all kinds of problems with his car, and was KILLING himself trying to sort it out. I let him borrow my Apexi BOV, and it was a night and day difference.

You can get TurboXS blow-off valves for just over $100 brand new. They also are on Ebay *all* the time as well. The TurboXS is not only inexpensive, it looks and sounds good, and actually *works* really well.

Brian Cain and I were the pioneers of the check valve concept back in the day - I know what I'm talking about here . Either spend some bucks, or save some money and get some headaches. I could almost understand if new BOV's were like $300, but they're not. Not to mention they take all of 5 minutes to install.

first of all, I was backwards cause I've had the valve turned so many times. You're correct that you just take it out of the factory Turbo Inlet (the S-Shaped restrictive POS), and put the Check valve on the end. You can orient it just about any way you like, as long as it doesnt' interfere with the spring on the Check Valve. And dcfc3s, like I said before, i had vac leak probs with mine like that too, so instead of spending $100 for a BOV (sounds like a good deal right?) plus MORE money to hook it up right (welding, flanges, or other mounting methods), I spend $15 on the Check Valve and "fixed" it to work correctly. If an aftermarket BOV for $100 will bolt right on to the car, then it might be a good deal, but from what I've seen, a little manipulation is needed
edit: sorry, I hate geocities, the pic above only shows for me on occasion, but if you cut and paste the addy, you can see it on my webpage

I was looking for a picture of it, but the TurboXS BOV's have a round flange that you weld on to whatever you want. But, that round flange (it's just a short piece of pipe, really) will stuff right in the 90 degree elbow that goes to the stock BOV and you just hose clamp it down. Literally takes 2 minutes to install - I've installed a few myself. The only out-of-pocket expense is a good worm drive hose clamp to make sure the hose is clamped onto the BOV good - no biggie.

Get the "universal" TurboXS kit and you'll be more than happy with it - trust me .

Has anyone encountered the results that dale is talking about? Also, is it ok to mount the BOV facing forward, along side the intake/air filter? I think it would just look better and not be as hot there.

I've experienced it multiple times on multiple cars...

The BOV doesn't care how it points, really.
