Yup, thats the study I was talking about. Excellent, and thank you DCMina. You to DeadRX7Convt (sad name).
Read this, and it will either confirm or change your view of good filters. Most interesting conclusion is that FRAM filters are the one of the LOWEST quality filters on the market.
Read and enjoy.

Mazda is the way to go. I buy them in lump orders at www.mazdaformance.com

since this thread is about filters... has anyone noticed there are two different mazda OEM filters.
a black mazda one and a blue mazda one...
rotary_pwr pointed this out to me on his J-spec engine he has... it has a black filter... mazdaperformance.com carries the black ones.
the dealers carry the blue ones...
so whats the diff... there has to be one.
iwant to know.

I would not worry too much about which oil filter. All new oil filters should work fine if oil is changed every 3k miles. I change it every 2k miles, that makes more of a difference.
I would stay away from FRAM though, sucky filtration.

Azone around here sells fram/stp/Mobil1 fitlers. The Pboys sell purolator and pepboys brand(relabelled purolator).
I would use the amsoil/kn if it were available in the area and if it didn't cost $12. I change my oil too frequently to get screwed by the filter cost. I bought a bunch of Mobil1's when Kmart closed one of the RI stores.
When I run out of filters, I will be picking up the OEM filters from mazdaformance.com--$4 for a quality filter is a steal. Even the orange ones cost $4 around here.
I have never knowingly used the WIX. I plan on running down to NAPA and grabbing a couple. If they are cheap, they would be a good filter for frequent changers.
I bought a pure1 filter once. It caused cam/valve clatter noise in one of my cars. Either it was a bad filter or it was too restrictive and the filter bypass(in engine or in filter) failed. I never had problems with other purolator filters. I never did bother with the pureone again. I plan on giving the pretty blue filter another chance.
In the late 80's/early 90's, I drove a renault alliance 200k miles on fram filters and cheapo oil. But, back then, fram filters were made in America. Now, they are made everywhere and I believe that quality suffers for profit margin. There are also two cars in my driveway with ~200k miles. Both cars lived on synthetic oil and whatever cheapo filter was available. I can see why some will argue that any filter will work if it is changed frequently. You would think differently if you heard these engines on cold February mornings. Gas engines can sound like diesels when cold. Filter/oil brands make a helluva difference in the winter.
One of the links was broken. This one compares filtration vs. pressure drop.

I would think that excessive restriction would cause the filter bypass to dump too much unfiltered oil. This could possibly be a problem with the rotary because it is a high rpm race like motor. I would think Mazda understands this and spec'd their filter for the rotary. We don't need to worry about ring/piston/cam/lifter/valve/rocker wear. Less filtration can be traded for oil pressure at high RPMs. This would keep the bearings and oil cooled rotors happy. Anyone know if Mazda uses the same RX7 oil filter part number with their boingers?? If so, everything in this paragraph is BS and Mazda doesn't give a hoot.

I've been using the toughguard fram filter becuase that's what O'Rilies seems to push and I don't think they carry a better filter. I'm not sure where I can get some of the better filters mentioned above. But I'm definatley gonna switch filters now
Canton-Mecca filter, twice the filtration, twice the flow rate of OEM filter, and no internal bypass(oil has to pass through filter). has replaceable element to view what was filtered and costs about $10 and can be changed once a year or about every 20K.
