Differential Question
Ok, I was being a dumb *** earlier, and decided to take a turn too quickly. Understeer sucks, but throttle oversteer is worse...Anyway, as I battled to maintain control, and keep my car from doing a 360 on a busy street, I noticed that I could actually FEEL each tire grip, then release. As the car swerved right, the left tire gripped, as I swerved left, the right one would grip. What differential do I have? 1991 n/a.

So, I get two different answers? Heh, thanks guys. It really saved my ***, what ever it is, cuz I could actually feel it correcting for me.

open diffrent ithinks, because if you got LSD then both tires will grip at the same time no matter turning left or right.
LSD is when two wheels spin at same time.
try jacking up the rear of the car and
-spin one tire the other tire should spin the other way - that's open differential
-if you spin one to one side and the other follows the same way that's LSD

LSD is - LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
lsd help two tires spin at the same time, but open differential one tires spin
so what?
open differential is safer but no good for performance, whatever side is heavier more grip and only that side of tire will spin and the other is being dragged
but for lsd
its more dangerous because once u press gas two wheels will spin no matter the weight and if u gas thro a turn ur back will slide out --*drifting*
lsd is also good in drag racing because if u have alot of horsepower you would want to use it by not letting traction escape..
if you guys still don't get it, prolly not cause i suck in explainin things, e-mail me..

LSD's still generally function like a differential in corners, unless you go and spin both tires or something. Otherwise, you'd have no tires because they'd both spin at the same rate, and whichever tire was on the inside of the turn would squack around every corner. Just jack up the car a little, go under it and look at the back of the differential for the filler bolt, if it's an LSD it usually has a tag on that bolt, if you want I can post a picture of what it looks like.

Sounds like an open diff. Worn out clutch type LSDs will do that, but I've read the S5's didn't have that type.
LSD rears are good, because if you overpower the tires and break traction with an open diff, all the power is transfered to the spinning wheel, where with an LSD the power is diverted to both wheels (somewhat) equally, reducing wheelspin.

The various 2nd gen models came equipped with the following types of differentials:
'86-'88 TII clutch type LSD
'89-'91 TII viscous type LSD
'86-'88 GXL clutch type LSD
'88 GTU (w/ hard suspension) clutch type LSD
'89-'90 GTUs (limited production model) viscous type LSD
If your car does not fit into any of the above categories, than your car came factory equipped with an open differential.
