Different Shifters?

I'm trying to put my old shifter from an 88 GXL into a TII trans of unknown year. It doesn't seem to fit, I'm not sure if they're incompatible or if I'm just having a hard time. If anybody knows whether or not a NA S4 shifter can fit into a S4 or S5 TII trans I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

S4 shifters are 12mm while S5's are 10mm.

That may be my problem.... I also noticed that the new transmission has a spring I have to push out of the way to install the shifter, but my old one didn't. Does anybody know if this spring out of place? Picture of spring below. Thanks for the help.

If I'm not mistaken that's the neutral spring which helps the shifter return to the neutral position.

Totally off topic question: Is the Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company still open in Ames?

I'm pretty sure the spring has to go towards the driver's side for the shifter to slide in, but I just can't get the thing in for the life of me. I did some searching and I'm pretty sure its an S4 trans. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried sliding the spring over with a flathead while wedging the shifter into place, and I've also tried pushing the spring with the shifter while jamming it into place. Thanks for the help.

K.ronic: I'm not sure if its still there, what street is it on?

It should just slide right in. You may have to hold the spring back with your finger and once the ball gets below the spring just push down a wiggle it. Should pop right in. The spring should be pushed torwards the driver.

Make sure you pour some grear oil in the hole where the ball goes in.

I know mazdatrix.com has a step by step process on how to do that. Pictures really help!!!! Look for shifter bushing replacement. Have you bought new bushings since your there already?

Just noticed that the thread that made me decide I have a S4 trans was talking about a NA trans.... So if anybody knows how to tell whether my TII trans is S4 or S5 I'd appreciate that information too. Thanks.

Yeah I topped the lube off since I took that pick, and have new bushings. I've done this a few times with my other trans and had no problems, I'm guessing they're not compatible.... Anybody think I can grind it to fit? Thanks for all the quick help.

It's been years since I was there so I don't really remember, but it was the main street near the University if I remember that much correctly. It's one of the best pizza joints that I have been to in my life.

I'm pretty sure its gone, I've never seen it, but I'll keep an eye out for it in a week when I go back.
