I have a n332, a n337(or was that 357, hmmm), and a n335 Last two are S5 Turbo, first is a series 4 Turbo (or at least, so I was told!)

All I know is that the '87 Turbo II is N332.
The '88 Turbo II is N333.
The '88 vert is N338.
The '86 (and '87?) non-turbo is N326.
I've got a Kouki Turbo II computer (unknown year) which has a N371 on it.
The J-spec ECU's have different numbering as well, so this is for North American cars.

but would it hurt to mix and match the ecu and afm?i havent experienced any problems doing it but was just wondering why it has to be for a reason at first i thought maybe they adjust the afm to the ecu but i think i would experience a headache trying to get it to run well thaks for all the helpful info i was really just more curious than worried oh yeah by the way did anyone know that the 88 cruise controll box is different than the 89 damn what was mazda doing? (hmmm lets see put this one here and that one there)

ALL Zenki NA ECU's all swap over.
ALL Zenki turbo ECU's swap over.
ALL Kouki NA ECU's swap over.
ALL Kouki turbo ECU's swap over.
Now, the only WEIRD one is that the N338 1988 vert ECU runs on both the NA *AND* turbo engines - super weird.  We've tried it and confirmed this works.  Kudos go to Sun Auto for figuring this out...

ive heard that the auto ecu's have a more agressive fuel map b/c the auto weighing the car down and 4 gears opposed to 5 for the manual so they tried to make up the lost power with a more powerful computer....so says a mazda guy i talked to that works with zillions of 2nd gens

Nothing to see here.
I've got an '87 TII running on an N326. This is not of my doing, I bought the car like that. I've got a TII ECU coming in soon with an SAFC to boot. The engine likes to gallop in small rev increments and I'm hoping it's this ECU. Please God, let if be the ECU. Please.

n332 and n333 seem to behave exactly the same. I had an n333 running my car with the rtek 1.7 upgrade and an safc2. I then sent out an n332 with the rtek1.7 to be upgraded to the 2.0 so I didn't need to remove my ecu. Installed it and it ran exactly the same(with the safc2 still doing the corrections).

So what you saying is that any US spec S4 turbo ECU will be able to replace my J Spec N318 turbo ecu ( 1987 )?

Surprised nobody has pasted this from rotaryresurrection.com
ECU Part Numbers (this is the version # that's on the ECU itself)
84-85 GSL-SE N304 18 880A
86-87 NA N326 18 880, N3Y6 18 880
87 Turbo N332 18 880
88 NA N327 18 880
88 Turbo N333 18 880
88 Convertible N338 18 880
89 NA California N350 18 880
89 NA Fed. N351 18 880
89 Conv. CA N352 18 880
89 Conv. Fed. N353 18 880
89 Turbo N370 18 880
NOTE - If there's an "R" at the end, it's a remanufactured ECU. They also change the last 3 digits to "881". Example - '89 Turbo Reman. - N370 18 881R. A remanufactured ECU isn't necessarily bad; it DOES mean the ECU was replaced.
