Different oil cooler question...I promise.
I need some opinions and insight on the stock oil coolers and their effectiveness. I am doing a rotary conversion in my '69 Beetle and I am well aware of the importance of the coolers in general. The problem is that since this engine will reside in the rear of the car an FMOC is not an option. I have the stock 2nd gen cooler but mounting it will be a problem and I'm afraid without direct airflow it may not work as well as designed. Taking cues from the VW sandrail crowd I have been looking at this:

This also comes in a 72 plate and 48 plate, there are others like 6 and 8 pass coolers that are smaller. The fan in the kit is 10". Oil cooling gurus, will this work well enough or is it overkill??

Interesting and sorry fot he OT post but did they make a FWD tranny for the rotary? also what are you doing to mount the radiator? You could use the Buick T-type intercooler mounting. On the bottom with a small scoop directing air over it.

the few v8 bugs i've seen have had the radiator where the back seat was with the floor cut out and a scoop on top to direct the air in,
it's pretty crude, i assume you could modify the front and somehow install it up there,

I will be mounting the radiator in the front where the spare tire normally sits and i will be running coolant lines through the heater channels.
I got a radiator from a guy in a trade. He said it was an upgrade from a stock RX7 radiator. Price tag on it was $225.

this will not work, you will kill the motor pretty quick. im almost 100% sure that you will not find an after market sollution for this rotary problem. you could look into mounting a fan on the FMOC or just run the beehive oil cooler from the 1st gen. ive seen it on many Vdub aplications. these coolers are more of heat exchanges especially the beehive, this is why i would recomend its use. think about it the Vdub motor is air cooled so there is prolly plenty of air circulating around in that area. this would make the beehive effective.
If you absolutly are set on an aftermarket oil cooler. try to find one that is the same size or larger than the FMOC also take a look at the ID of the fittings running in it youll find that most are much much smaller that the OEM FMOC
