difference usdm s4 tII motor vs jdm

Hi everyone. I found someone in my area selling a full 13bt. i currently have a 87 t2 and it came out of an 88 but he did not originally own the car and he doesnt know if its JDM or USDM. He only wants 200 for it so I want to get it and use it as the a core to rebuild, street port and then install so I have no dt on my 87. How do I know if its jdm or usdm(can you give me some things to look for) and also if it is jdm what will I have to do to make it work. Again they are both S4s and they are both t2s.

Visable differences to identify a J-spec S4 engine:

No EGR
No AWS
No sub-zero starting assist system
Different ACV with no split air solenoid
FPR and PD in opposite locations
Twin-scroll actuator on rear end of exhaust manifold
No thermovalve on TB

SO in other words, practically no emissions?

I always thought that japan had the highest emission standards in the world next to california.. I was told that it was mandatory to change an engine out after so many km's, and it was a low number.

No, the emission system is practically identical other than the listed omissions. The secondary air injection system (air pump, ACV, split air pipe and cat) is what does the bulk of the work, and that stuff is basically all the same.

Um, no...

did some one say the pulsation dampener is on the opposite side? if so that would solve the engine fire problems we occasionally have.

Here's the easy way then. Go look at the intercooler. If it says "Turbo II" it's a US engine; if it says "Rotary Turbo with Intercooler" (like my avatar) then it's a J-spec.

Go to www.iluvmyrx7.com/2nd_gen_manuals.htm and download the Factory Service Manual (FSM) in PDF format for free. All of the items I mentioned are shown in there. Don't forget to search too.

No, I didn't say it was on the opposite "side", I said the FPR and PD in opposite locations. The FPR is on the primary rail and the PD is on the secondary rail. Although this makes it a bit easier to see the PD, it doesn't make a leaking PD any less of a problem.
