difference between s4/s5 PS pumps?

is there a difference between s4 and s5 power steering pumps? the PS pump on my s5 TII has a terminal fluid leak and i'd like to just replace it with another used one. a friend of mine has a leak-free 88 PS pump sitting in his garage that i'd like to use.

is there any difference?

there are two types
the rpm one and the speed one

i believe the top model s5 have the speed one, and the s4 have the speed one because htey have koyo on it

the low model s5 have the rpm one

soooo you should be fine

I know the system is different....S5 is engine load sensing whereas S4 is vehicle speed....and I believe the setup on the pumps is SLIGHTLY different because of it.....

But you may be able to swap only the pump and use the valves etc. from the S5....Ive never tried though

The US spec Turbos with power steering all came with speed sensing power steering.

All the US spec S4 non turbos that came with power steering all came with speed sensing power steering.

The majority of the US spec S5 non turbos, came with engine speed sensing power steering.

The only difference between a S4 vehicle speed sensing and S5 Vehicle speed sensing steering is the plug at the power steering pump.

But the engine speed sensing steering pump is radically different.

There were also some other minor software changes in the power steering CPU between 86 and 87, but is hardly worth talking about here.

Slpin - how is this not suggesting that there are two different systems?

you are saying the S5 is the rpm one, and the S4 is the mph one.

and you are COMPLETELY wrong in that because the S5 has BOTH the rpm and mph one.

clearly, you are unsure and dont know what you are talking abou.

Why can't everyone just take out their powersteering? We all clearly know it's useless and for the sake of arguement also.

i'm not sure if you've ever autocrossed, but its a total pain in the *** when you have to constantly fight the steering wheel (especially when you have a power rack with no pump)

Actually I think only a idiot takes out a perfectly well functioning vehicle speed sensing power steering system.

Either that or someone that does not drive much.

There is no reason to remove a functioning vehicle speed sensing power steering system. It does not rob any HP at anything above 40 MPH. It does not change the ratio. The only weight savings with one removed are less than 20 lbs.

Just no reason... Well wait, I did think of a reason... unless your system is broken and you are too cheap to fix your car correctly.

Of course the same kind of person might post in a thread asking about differences bewteen pumps, that someone should rip the system out... like that is helpful. If he or she wanted to rip it out they wouldn't be asking about pumps now... would they???

Trust me, I've daily driven w/o power steering. It's some sissy stuff to have it on.

This is what I found out when I put an s4 pump on an s5... this may not be true for all the s4 and s5 pumps but it's what I ran into... There is a difference in the electrical connections between the s4 and s5 speed sensing pump (3 line pump)... both s4 and s5 pumps have 2 connections... one of the connections is the same and one is different... the connection that has 6 wires in it (and comes from the controller on top of the pump... the thing that says koyo) is the same for both series but the other connection is different. on the s4 pumps the other connection has 2 wires, one red and one black (this pair of wires comes out of a sensor at the bottom of the pump) and on the s5 there is only one wire... and the connectors are different... This doesn't mean the s4 pump wont work on the s5 but it won't be totally "plug and play" ... you'll have to splice one connection together.
