Difference between Fb and FC starters?

I recently bought an S4 motor from a member that had rebuilt it and wanted to put it into an FB. I changed the oil pan and front cover back to stock S4 NA.

When I was bolting up the transmission, I realized that the starter looks different than mine.

It seems the wiring is "on top" of the starter for one. Secondly, the bolt holes are threaded. I seem to remember the bolt holes being "through-holes" and bolt into the transmission or through the transmission and engine flange with a nut.

I do not know what an FB starter looks like, but this may be one.

My Question:

Is it possible to "drill-out" the threads on this starter and use it on the second gen?

The car this going in is a 87 GXL (Still NA).

The 1st gen uses a different starter depending on it's engine. There were several different starters used. The 12A cars (especially the early ones) got big starters that look nothing like the FC starter. The 13B cars got a smaller starter but it's not a swap. The mounts are in the wrong location.

You generally need to match the starter to the flywheel and transmission. FC transmission = FC starter.
