Dies when it goes in gear

My 87 2nd gen rx7 has no vacuum leaks, it idles fine, sounds good. i just have a major problem that when every time i put it in gear and the engine has a load it will either studder bad an maybe die, or it will die. It's an automatic by the way. I need someone with this type of experience to help me. any suggestions will be tried and greatly appreciated.

Mine does the same thing, but not quite as bad. I have to be turning the steering wheel at the same time as holding the brake pedal and shifting. From what I know, it's a combination of weak transmission, slow/sticky bac, and idle speed set to low (possibly a dirty throttle body). I have to two foot drive to keep my idle rpms happy at stop lights. If you time it just right, you can shift and then feather the gas without getting it to clunk into gear and your engine won't die.
