did the pilot&release bearings, now.......

well, here i am again, you guys helped me out alot with doing the pilot bearing and the release bearing so i'm here to ask you a couple of new questions now.

1) when i'm driving the car fast, shifting fast and plain old racin around for the fun of it i get a grinding when shifting up into and down into 3rd gear and only 3rd gear. it also seems to only happen if the revs are over 3000 and only if i'm trying to shift quickly (rather than normal city driving when you can take your time and just ease it into gear)

2) i'm getting a plastic burning kind of smell, and it seems to me that it eminates from somewhere in the rear of the vehicle cause it smells the strongest coming out of the driver's side rear wheel well.

hopefully i've provided enough information for you guys to at least be able to prompt me for anything else i may be able to offer so you can help me solve these problems.

thanks again for the help guys......"all y'all rock" (<-------my feeble attempt at american)

Stop doing it.
The 3rd gear synchro is dying.
Grinding it just makes it fail faster.
Only a rebuild will fix this problem.
This fix is not cheap.

i guess this would be a great time to start savin money, and doin a little research on trannies......look into to either a good quality new one, or just pick up a used one from a parts yard.

I have the same problem (Sychros Going)

Anyone know where to get rebiuld parts for the tranny?

Also, adding to this thread a bit (slightly OT):
Anyone know where I can find ACCURATE information on the gear ratios for S4, S5, and Miata trannies? (Since I'm going to have them open, I was wondering about swapping gears around). Theres so many pages with conflicting information . . . And I KNOW the S4 and S5 have different ratios.

For the S4/S5 N/A & Turbo ratios see the "What did the FC come with" at the top. Ratios listed for each year.
Miata Transmission ratios 5 Speed Manual/6 Speed Manual
1st gear 3.136 / 3.76
2nd gear 1.888 / 2.269
3rd gear 1.33 / 1.645
4th gear 1.257 / 1000
5th gear 0.814 /1.00 /
6th gear - / 0.843 /

If clutch fluid is leaking onto your clutch and burning, that might do it

when i had the clutch out to do the pilot bearing and the throw out bearing the flywheel and clutch plate didn't seem to be overly dirty, and there wasn't any burning or excessive fluid that i could tell, it was pretty much dry. how would i check if there was fluid leaking into there? i wouldn't have to pull out the tranny again would i?

Thanks for the correction. That was a little ambiguous in hindsight.

As far as a burning smell in that area, the exhaust is the only hot thing back there so my guess is you got a plastic bag caught on it or something. If it was a hot smell inside and your cat overheat circuit was not functional and the cat was overheating?

Also you'd know if you had fluid on the clutch disc because you wouldn't be going anywhere it'd be slipping so bad.

Assuming your clutch is adjusted?

Try matching your revs. A little heal/toe action?

What in the hell do those numbers stand for? I've never known, just curious thats all. Is it like the radius of the teeth of the gear, to the shaft that the gear rides on? or somethin?

It's a ratio. As in 3.136:1

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/gear-ratio1.htm

If that works it has a very good explanation of ratios in regards to automotive transmissions.
