Use the OLD spacer from your FC alternator! Just widen it out. And as for the pulleys, go to the junkyard and get a V-pulley off of the old GM (Delco) alternators. It will fit right in. Most alternator places can help you too.

No its not, the pulley on the FD is a serpentine, and the shaft is larger. That in my opinion, was the hardest part. Then the electrical is different. There is a link in this post to a writeup that RX7 Ragtop did. I used that one, and it was an excellent writeup.

Wait, J-rat, what if I paid you to do the same thing to another pulley?

You want me to do what? Get you the pulley? I can probably do that. I dont have another spacer, you are gonna have to get one off of another FC alternator.

Hm. What if I sent you the spacer?

Acutally, my spacer was two spacers put together. And then I think I added a few more. But they seemed to clamp to the alternator.

Let me elaborate. The FC stock spacer was two spacers put together in the good old A-bomb plant...

Now I am completely lost...The spacer off of your FC alternator was a 2-peice alternator?

Do you still want me to convert the spacer?

Not to be annoying. But is it possible that your old alternator was in rough shape and that is why this new one made such an improvment?

I doubt it...I owned 2 of them...The E-fans take alot off of the stock FC alternator. The factory only rates them at 55 amps... withthe FD alternator, I turn beter amps, and the e-fans run faster...

Erf, Sorry J-Rat.

When I took the pulley off my FC alternator, the old spacer was what appeared to be two washers. I dunno, I guess I could dremel out the spacer, except that I don't have a dremel. I could go to the junk yard, I guess. Unless you have one nearby. What GM models should I be looking for? What years?

The spacer is the long cylindrical peice BEHIND the whole pulley assembly. The whole process is easy if you have another FC alternator. If you send me all the peices you have, I can try to rig something to fit your FD alternator.

So do your headlights still dim when you hit the brakes? Mine dim down like a champ. Hell, sometimes it dips the voltage enough that the radio reboots.

Not anymore, there IS a slight voltage drop at idle, and I have a theory as to why...

the original pulley on the FD alternator has a signifigantly smaller diameter. Therefore it turns faster at idle. With the new V-belt pulley, the idle speed is a bit slower. The voltage drop isnt large by any means, but it is there..

Its not a flame, me and him raz each other all the time..

Actually, the mechanical part was fairly self-explanitory, but your section on the electrical part was what was really helpful..

Because your 88 alternator is rated for about 70 amps, 55 permissible by the FSM. If you are running e-fans like I am, that automatically chews through another 10-15 Amps of juice. If you run the A/C, and headlights (remember, I live in Tucson), it was pretty much taking all the alternator had, and I was beginning to run on battery.

The FD alternator is rated for 90-100 Amps. There are other options you can use, I just chose to do the FD conversion.

what readings do you get with EVERYTHING on in the car?
