Demand for auto-5spd bracket diagrams?

I just went through this about a month ago, a friend is going through it now. There is no supply of brackets/mount adaptors.

Would there be a request for me to fab up some PDF files that you can print out and take to a shop to have the mounts fab'd up?

Yes-- you can take either the writeup from Kevin Lander's page, or from the archived section. But if I worked in a metal shop, I'd say less text more pictures

Soon my page will have a slightly better writeup with pictures.

I used to offer the brackets to the public, but it turned into a big PIA, and I had better things to do than struggle with cutting and drilling a chunk of metal without the proper equipment. Now I even have a hard time sourcing c-channel for the conversion.

IF someone had a connection at a metal shop for both materials and production equipment, they're REALLY simple to make, and Im sure they'd sell well in the $40-80 range. I'd like to see some professionally made as well, it just won't be me doing it

I'd love to have the CAD drawing of that please. I do work at a shop that can do the cutting of the metal and I can easily arc weld the pieces at home so send me the diagrams/drawings and I'll see what can be done.

You know what c-channel is, right? Take a 3" wide section, 8-9" in length. Find the centerline, and mark it. Make 2 holes, each 1/2" in diameter, along this centerline. The only important part is that these holes be 5-1/8" apart, center to center. That is it.

You could experiment with different materials, this works well for me. I need to find a better supply of it, though. Where do you buy this stuff?

Me and project84 had were joking about this actually. I was trying to figure out what the writeup on your page said. I mean.. its clear as day when you look at the finished project what is going on... but yeah.

Looking forward to seeing something new on your site kevin, its always been super helpful!

I'd Imagine for whoever deceides to invest the time, they could make a little money on the side. I know I was much happier paying $50, than trying to fab up something out of scrap pieces that I might find-- or for that matter forcing myself to try and understand what the writeups said.

Now that I have the finished product, its pretty ovbious. I just know I wouldn't want to be a metal shop and get handed that writeup :P

hell yeah I do! I think you should post them on the forum. If the files are too large, or are CAD files, I can host them on my webserver (its slow, but pretty reliable).

It seems that way with most of the stuff on my page. I generally think of myself as a good teacher, and someone who takes time to explain the big picture, the overall workings of a system in question and how to troubleshoot that system. BUt, some people have a hard time grasping what is said. Perhaps I am too deeply rooted in technical areas to view things from an outside perspective.

I try to spell things out as best I feel they should be, but sometimes I wonder if I should aim to make it idiot-proof. Sometimes, people make it seem as if they want me to come to their location and do it for them, out of the kindness of my heart. Some people call up and wanna talk for hours about whatever project they're involved in, with no intention of buying anything from me...they think I'm their personal technical support line or something.

So you have to see it from my point of view as well.

Yeah, I noticed that. I talked to brian (the webpage guy) about it a long time ago, but it slipped through the cracks and never got done. I don't have actual control over my own page, you know. Even now, there is major reconstruction in the works, but I personally have no idea how to do it, so there it sits.

Totaly do, infact if it weren't for your writeup's I probably would have never attempted the 5spd swap at all. The writeups do an excellent job of explaining what things can be done, and how to do them. The only part that ever made my eyes glaze was that whole bracket thing. I'm sure if I had taken the time, and had the materials and tools on hand, it wouldn't seem so dificult. But just trying to imagine it was somewhat of a painful task :P

BTW: that flywheel worked out perfect! Went in fine and has been doing great.

We deal with lots of different metal suppliers and when I used to work in the Maintenance department, we often fabricated lots of things using c-channel and various angle irons. Lots of cutting, drilling, tapping, welding....

The first 2 suppliers that come to mind for me are Grainger or McMaster-Carr.

Why go thru the hassleof having to make a bracket. Just weld the mounting ears in from a manual car. then you have the FACTORY mounting points.

The brackets mount the tranny to the factory mount points. Theres nothing else under the car to mount a transmission to.

I'm going to be making a set of brackets today. If the materials are cheap enough, maybe I'll make a few extra sets for those of you looking for a dirt cheap deal. (As dirt cheap as possible ) I'll post a thread to see if how big of a demand there is and also to show pics of how they turn out.

John, not everybody is a welder. Also, not everybody has access to stock 5sp mounting points from a 5sp chassis. Finally, not everyone would want to tear apart their entire interior, carpet and seats, just to do this safely.

Is this what the stinker is supposed to look like? 1/2" holes, 5 1/8" apart on center, 3" wide c-channel, 9" long

If this is all it is, man I'll be able to make plenty of those heheh

Kind of... but not.

Its more like two pieces that overlap

Hmmm, Kevin's writeup (and even the quote up above in this thread) doesn't mention anything about 2 pieces. You must be making it out of 2 angle irons and welding them together down the center, right?

White, that is what it is supposed to be. At least, what I make anyway. There are several variations that would work, from different materials.

Ok cool thanks Kevin. Making these at work will be a breeze. Now in your writeup, you say 8" or 9" length. Does one or the other work better for any reason, and will this be universal for S4 and S5 alike?

Thanks!

8" lengths work fine for me...I usually come off one end 1.5" and make my first hole, then measure to the second one. The only time this might not work okay is if you have a custom exhaust that runs a little differently from stock, especially an aftermarket cat. The stock cat sits about 1/2" away from this adaptor when made properly.

There is no difference in s4 and s5 trans stuff.
