defi temp d-gauge going crazy

while i was driving today my defi oil temp gauge started bouncing around all over the place. i know that the needle bounces back and forth when there's a short or no signal but it's nothing like that. and when i turned off my car the needle went to the 300 mark and stayed there. i hear that oil temp sensors go bad pretty often but it's only been about 3 months. anyone else have this problem?

Disconnect the sender and see if it still happens?
If it does, it's the gauge.
If it stops (I think it should peg max with the sender disconnected), then it's the sender.

Not surprising...
I have a customer with a brand new Omori boost gauge.
It was broken when we first installed it.
