Question Custom Intake Manifold

Has anyone try making a custom intake manifold say out of aluminum. Just wondering because the stock one seem a long way for air to travel.

Not that I know of. Most people just port/match them.

The runners are long for a couple reasons, but mainly to help torque. That said, I'm planning on making a new manifold for my TII sometime in the <relatively> near future.

If you change runner lengths and plenum volumes yet you don't change the stock ecu, you aren't going to get much out of it. The stock engine has long runners that tune the engine for streetability. This is also where your gear ratios work best. If you want a higher rpm power band prepare to make some sacrifices. The stock afm will max out very quickly so you may gain very little if any up top but lose low end. Your gas mileage will probably suffer. The first thing you should do is to replace the stock ecu with a standalone unit. You'll gain about 10% hp just by getting rid of the afm. Then you can worry about a new manifold since you can now tune to it. Don't even think about bandaiding the system with that damn S-AFC piece.

Here's my custom built T-II manifold. No more stock ecu here. Forgive the mess, that was when the car was under construction.
