what can I say, I'm ghetto lol. I just cut holes in sheet metal then jammed it above me stereo(when I still drove this on the street and had an interior/stereo)



the junky AF gauge isnt there anymore, its replace with a water temp gauge

 

check the second gen for sale section there is a couple people making din plates for under the radio one of them is making them custom to hold SAFC's, boost controllers and gauges with RX7 logos and such there pretty sweet

 

Yeah, I was thinking about mounting some gauges above the radio like that, but I've seen it done one too many times.

I was actually thinking of buying a cheap single gauge pod and fabricating it to fit on the black plastic that covers my driver's side
power mirror wires. I just noticed there was a lot of extra space there below my dual A-pillar pods. What do you guys think?

 

IMO, the best kind of "guage pod" is just a flat peice of black plastic with two holes in it for the gauges, bolted to the instrument panel hood (on the side, next to the light controls or whatever)

cheap, and looks cool since it matches the panels and stuff (at least on the AE86...hehe).

 

I have my boost gauge wedged between the A pillar and my roll cage.

 

done it...looks cool until you shut the door and destroy all the hard work you put into it...

 

Do you have any pics of how it came out, before you destroyed it?
I do plan on designing mine according to how it's positioned and facing.

Anybody else have any unique ideas?

 

problem is the wieght on that bezel... slam the door once and the gauge will pull the trim out of the door.

 

I like this setupbecause i dont like how a-pillar gauges "stand out" to other people.

 

I disagree and agree. Yeah I don't really like how it stands out to other people. It kind of says "Hey, I'm a RICER BRO!!!"

But then again, I like where it's positioned so I can just glance to my left to check my gauge while im driving. Looking down at the radio to check vital gauges doesn't seem to suit me well. But to each his own.

Does anyone run gauges where their idiot lights are? Is it a good place to run gauges?

 

I don't like either pillars or console guages...pillar guages obsruct my view and console guages don't offer you a good view. This is why I always try to mount the guages in the dash, in stock locations.

The view is fine.

I saw similar in I think, Turbo Magazine. It was done to a 3rd gen.

Above my radio I have the Greddy Boost, and Turbo Timer computers. So, that did not leave me much room for them anywhere else. I thought for a while, and saw the pic in the mag, and said, that might work. All the wires are between the two plates of the glove box. I can still use my glove box as well, no real change there.

 

What about using glue behind the bezel? Or some other kind of sticky material you can take off easily?
My black plastic cover is already broken on both sides so I was planning on using glue or something.

 

it's just getting the fitment right...in order to use a decent 2.5" guage, the bezel will almost certainly be a snug fit. when you shut the door it breaks the mounts or body from hitting the pillar or dash. I even tried with a 2 1/8 guage and had a similar effect...

Guages just don't like to be there.

I'll make you a bezel that fits in the triangle defrost vent that fits a 2 1/8" guage for $30. I'm already in the process of making the mold for mine anyway...

this gauge pod with my 2 1/8" water temp gauge.. Thanks for the warning. I know what to look out for.

My purchased gauge pod. Housing my boostcontroller and wideband.

 

The pod..... I made. Took about 75 hours of work!!!!

 

I THINK it was 1FastTii that made the stainless steel radio frame.

He made it with the cutout for the raio and then I modded it to fit the Profec and drilled the six holes for the idiot lights.

He also makes them with circle cutouts to put gauges below the stereo.
