Custom Gauge mounting

So i have decided that i am going to install my own gauges, and learn how to do my own fiber glassing. I beleive i am fairly smart so i should be able to figure out the Fiberglass+harderner on the dash, then cover with the fiberglass mat Etc.. i believe that is the process then sanding????????
Well i seen alot of people mounting them under the cd player and what not? i really like the look of that...What is the best way to come up with a bracket that fits in there? or how i should approach making one?
any ideas anyone that can help it would be greatly appreciated

See the attached pic. If that's the area you're referring to, start by removing the plastic stuff in that slot. Measure the opening and cut a cardboard rectangle just a bit larger than the opening. Trim the cardboard rectangle to fit snuggly in the opening. Draw the openings for your gauges on the cardboard and cut them out. Make sure you leave a bit of space between the cutouts for the trim rings on the gauges. Fit your gauges in the cutouts to verify that there is enough space between the cutouts.

When you are satisfied with the cardboard mockup, transfer the design to some 1/8" aluminum stock. Cut out the rectangle with a jigsaw (using the correct blade for metal). Drill holes in each of the gauge openings to allow for inserting a hacksaw blade. Get a carbide hacksaw blade (it's round-not flat-and rough) and cut out the gauge openings. Be careful to not apply too much force when cutting out the openings or you may bend the aluminum. Use appropriate metal files to do the final fitting of the mount to the opening in the dash and the gauges in the openings of the mount.

Test mount the gauges in the openings and remove any areas that bind on the sides of the gauges. File down the mount until it fits snubbly in the dash opening. It should be snug enough so that you won't really need to use any fasteners to hold it in place. If it doesn't fit snuggly enough, use a dab of silicone in each corner to secure it in place. BTW, with the ashtray out, you can reach behind the mount with your fingers to pop it out. Good luck!

i think that mounting the gauges like that makes them hard to see. For one, the under the radio. two, they arent even facing the driver. Gauges need to be easy to spot while driving. What good do they do, if you almost wreck just trying to spot them?

I would like to see a plate that is angled toward the driver so they can read them while driving. They should also go on top of the radio. I realize that makes it difficult to mess with the radio, but I dont have one. The only music I need is the sweet sound of that 13bt.

If you (or anyone) can make one like this, I'd buy one.

just my $.02

Thanks that does help alot i was just curious you know on how to get it started and what not... thanks for the input... and i think it is a great place for some extra gauges... Yes i understand the point of them is to see while driving. I will try and see how it goes. So i can just go to like a Menards or Home depot or something and get that aluminum? and then just make it into like a rectangular shape and go from there? thanks guys

I just want to have the sickest Rx7 and Fastest around here...
Also i just bought a Rx7 1986 alls it needs is a motor and it is the Turbo Model so i will have a Non turbo 1987 Gxl and a turbo.
