Custom Exhaust

Hey guys,

My exhaust is kinda past it's best on my NA FC, and was hoping to get a custom stainless system (Mid-back). Emailed a guy about getting it done and said it'd probably be about £315 for it, all in. Took the car to him and the quote changed to £716...

Would anybody say that sort of price is right? All I was after was a standard set up replacement, one mid box silencer splitting off into 2 back boxes.

If anybody knows anywhere good to get an exhaust system made in Yorkshire too, that'd be awesome!

Thanks guys,
Jon

I had an exhaust made for my car from downpipe back for $400 with a magnaflow muffler. So you have two mufflers and a presilencer, so yours will be more than mine. Probably $650 usd, which is idk what in pounds.

with a custom exhaust there are soo many variations. I don't know much about a proper length of tubing for a NA application. the cost will depend on the type of muffler you are using, premade merges, "h" pipes, and "y" pipes.

A 304 stainless tig welded exhaust really takes a lot of time to make. You could also have stainless mig welded with stainless wire, but if your going to pay for a custom stainless exhaust, I would go with a TIG welded exhaust.

There is nothing wrong with mild steel exhaust, especially if its going to be mig welded. If things get real hot, the stainless will loose all its properties anyways and you'll save money on mild steel

I would think about how much sound muffling you are looking for first. And also find a place that does quality work, or else you might be better off just buying a premade system. I like my racing beat because its not too loud. I would consider looking into the universal racing beat mufflers

If you just want a standard setup, then why are you shopping for a custom exhaust rather than a standard pre-made catback like Apexi or Racing Beat? In the USA, a pre-made 304 stainless catback exhaust costs around £420-635, while a pre-made mild steel catback is about £305. The custom 321 stainless exhaust on my car was about £2,000.

Thanks guys. Reason I was looking for a custom made system is because I've not managed to find a premade system online (maybe haven't tried hard enough to look in all fairness). I'll have a look into that now though, thanks!

Thanks for the links jjwalker! Looks like its still cheaper for me to get a custom exhaust though I think, which gives me a life time warranty too. Just wondering, of all the exhausts I've seen for FC's online, they don't seem to have the connection for a heater pipe that my car has on the downpipe, don't suppose anybody know's if there is a way around this?

What is a 'heater pipe' in American English?

I think that is on the header.

Road Race Header for 86-88 RX-7 - Racing Beat

or the Mid pipe

What year is your car?

Mines an '88, I've worded it terribly I realise but couldn't think how else to explain haha. After the header pipe there is a pipe that curves down towards the midbox/cat, on this pipe there are two things going off it. One pipe is like a secondly exhaust pipe (just a straight through exhaust pipe that follows down to the back of the car) and there is then another pipe connected with a union bolt that then goes up towards the engine, which I've been told is possibly to help the car start when cold (for warm air), sorry if this isn't making sense! Haha

That's your split-air pipe. Sends air pump air to the cat under some conditions (controlled by the computer and air control valve - ACV). The smaller pipe that tees off of it near the engine is used to activate 6PI (the auxiliary ports some people call 5th and 6th ports).

oh yeah, you guys have a thermal reactor system, those other pipes are for the air injection, which is sent too the heat exchanger, which is in the middle, to get warmed, and then back to the front to get injected into the exhaust. the vent is the small pipe out the back.

the Japanese and US FC's have something different, or more normal, a cat
