this thread scared me away from the inserts about 3 months ago...

I opted to just remove the stock 5th and 6th ports sleeves all together. Sure the PR sleeves are "cute" by design, but i can simply not offord to loose a motor to a 40$ peice of equipment. Remove your sleeves and loose a little low end torqe, or by the PR sleeves and risk the possibility of loosing a perfectly good motor to them.. you deside. All in all if PR redisigns the sleeves i might consider them, but after seeing a couple reply's in this thread it's a no go for now.

i am gonna call him and see what he sais.

I still think they are a great idea.... With a little modification can be used safely.

Some suggestions (i know PR should be giving these directions *especially since corksport is selling them now as well*)

--Remove the dowels and loctite the sleeves in/open.
--Weld the inserts into the sleeves (RarestRx idea)
--I used grey metal bonding loctite and I've been going for about 2-3k miles without issues I also scratched up the surface

Perhaps we can forward these to PR for more testing / documentation that should be shipped with the sleeves.

OUCH!!!!! how hot did the engine get? Looks almost as if the aluminum got REAL hot and melted against the pin.

FWIIS, I have removed my Pineapple sleeves

RarestRX 10-14-03 04:40 PM

Yo,

Holy shitballs. I just put them in my GTUs!

We tried to weld them, but it wasn't going to work out. We then drilled through the back of the sleeve and tapped the insert. Put a countersunk screw in and went for it...

Unfortunately, the machine shop that did the work had put the sleeves in a vice and they got a little bit out of round. We couldn't use them.

Luckily, Jsotelo had a set of original Pineapple sleeves where they were pre-loctited in. We used those.

Damn though, those are some ugggly photos. Makes me want to pull then ones I have and do the drill and tap on 'em.

Best of luck getting a new motor/money from Pineapple.

I don't want to get into the middle of this controversy, but I need to comment on the (red) Loctite...

Be careful about which Loctite product you use. I've used the red Loctite on stuff immersed on oil, and it promptly failed. The 6-ports are being doused in gasoline, because the (secondary) fuel injectors are upstream of the 6-port. I would not recommend using red Loctite for this application. The green Loctite *is* specifically designed for exposure to petroleum products, and it should be the type to be used for this application...

i think green locktite is what was used to do this. bu ti am not sure.

vosko 10-14-03 07:34 PM

man that engine ran good too GODDAMIT !

No john, that is from the insert sliding around due to vibration and air pulses inside the intake. IT actually slides end to end, banging against the pin. IN my case, a pin was broken out of the sleeve, really similar to what you see in those pics. So what you see is the effect of hundreds or thousands of contacts between the insert and the pin...it is a miracle it lasted that long if you think about it.

I posted another link to this on teh FC mailing list, and will probably fish up the old one on teamfc3s forums to spread teh word some more. IT is clear that certain things should be happening with these sleeves that *still* are not happening. How many innocent engines will it take??

Guys, the lack of updates to the Pineapple Racing web site is my fault. We've been planning some major revisions but I have simply been too busy and I no longer live in Portland, so it is no simple task for me to "drop by" and take photos and talk to Rob about what needs to be done. I am now a Contributing Editor to a new, nationally distributed automotive magazine called Driving Sports and this pretty much takes up 100 percent of my available time.

Anyway, after being reminded of this thread, I have spent a couple hours creating instructions and updating the web page to reflect them. These are the same instructions Rob has always provided over the phone. It is indeed unfortunate if anyone didn't receive them verbally in the past, but those would be rare exceptions!

Either Red (#271) or Green (#262) Loctite are acceptable bonding agents, though Green is preferred. Additionally, we suggest you mechanically secure the inserts as described in the instructions. And, as ALWAYS, Pineapple Racing will gladly install the inserts for you at no cost other than the two-way postage! Rob stopped the core exchange almost immediatley when no one returned the cores and we ran out, but he has always been willing to install them in (clean) sleeves mailed to the shop.

gotdatfiyah 10-15-03 05:35 PM

whats PR's position on HELPING to replace engines to those whom didnt recieve instructions? Not having time isnt a valid excuse i dont think. If your business is selling, take care of your consumer. Not having time to give instructions in writing, which would take less than 5 minutes, over a period of 3 months....i very much consider that negligence.

RarestRX 10-15-03 06:06 PM

What does that mean? Are you referring to the Loctite, or is there some method of using roll pins/screws etc?

Lets us know!! Lots of worried folks here.

It means, go to the web site and download the instructions, which includes a photo. It is total overkill if you are using Green Loctite, BTW, but so easy to do that you might as well do it for peace of mind.

People who have had failures should call Rob and discuss the matter like adults. This should be the first step in any case of this nature. Anyone who has done business with Rob knows that he takes care of customers to a fault, but you should not expect him to replace engines from user error (mis-installation). Instructions were available verbally and I'm sure that if there was any confusion he would have drawn a picture and faxed it to you. He provided these verbal instructions to every customer, but in the event he forgot to do so (unlikely) YOU should have asked for them. ("Hey,I didn't get instructions! Rob, how do I install these?"). Simple as that. NO ONE was refused instructions and Pineapple Racing always made itself available to do the installation for FREE if asked. At least, that is my take. I don't work for Pineapple Racing and cannot speak for Rob on this matter. Call him if you have any questions.

Mr. Gadget 10-15-03 07:20 PM

After 130 days the directions finally appear. WOW. And complete with a disclaimer. I feel for you guys who lunched an engine over a little low end torque

Blake 10-15-03 08:08 PM

130 days to put it on the web site from the first post by someone who screwed up the installation. Direction have been provided verbally from day one (not 130 days ago, but for a couple years), and there is no other way to order the product except by calling and talking to someone.

Blake 10-15-03 08:11 PM

BTW, I'm not a Forum regular and I'm not a Pineapple Racing employee, so further questions or comments on this issue should be directed to Pineapple Racing by phone (503) 233-3878.

1987RX7guy 10-15-03 08:13 PM

Blake I am sorry but I can have something updated to my own website in roughly 10min-2hours. Depending on how big it is.

Mind you ALL our webmaster is not working for pay but for our own products. :)

Jonathan is a great guy and does things very fast. I can't imagine why someone that probably pays to have their website made can't do the same if not better.

22k miles on my set without a problem. I love mine, and am leaving them in my car.

I'm hoping the Rx-8s sleeves are the same style. Should be a easy couple hp then.....

CJ

1987RX7guy 10-15-03 08:26 PM

IIRC the Renesis uses this STYLE of curved sleeves but I am sure they are not glued on. But then again it IS mazda. lol!

CJ did you ever sell your true duals?

If not are you still selling them?

rx7raca 10-15-03 09:11 PM

so thats what happened to your engine, that is messed up. how can they make such a design that could fail like that...you would think they would make them strong, so they would last, not only did just one break, but both did. thats horrible.

did they break because of heat? or just a weak material? or because of both reasons?

1987RX7guy 10-15-03 09:16 PM

I beleive they came loose. Because they were not secured properly.

rx7raca 10-15-03 09:39 PM

oh damn i must of missread something...but still those things tore apart, no?

if you arent a PR employee dont speak for them, or claim that verbal instructions were given...."verbal" means absolutely nothing....you personally dont know who recieved verbal instructions and who didnt. You were told they were given to everyone, obviously they werent...i think the whole point of this thread was to get instructions posted on the site, so that this wouldnt happen again. Thanks to all that were involved in getting the instructions posted, but personally, i think 130 days is just a little long for something that should've been posted originally.

mwpayne 10-15-03 09:49 PM

I remember SPECIFICALLY talking to Rob, and I asked SPECIFICALLY how to install them, he said something to the effect 'they're just pressed in'. This was about 8 months ago.
I'm dropping this as far as I'm concerned, Kevin fixed the engine at no charge to me ( again, I insisted on paying for parts) and I'm happy and ready to move on.
Just everyone BE AWARE when using these...
