The 86-88 style will be plastic and while the plastic is fine when new, after 5 or 10 years or so it will be brittle again (much like the 89-92 style that gets brittle under the rubberized coating and breaks up after 5 or 10 years).
Ice, are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that's a stock shift setup? Here's why I ask:
Not only does that look like a really short throw for 3rd gear, the interior shows that the car is an s4 but it has a miata shift ****. A miata shift **** will not fit on an s4 shifter but I think it will fit on an s5. However, if you're like me and did a miata short shift mod and purchased the miata **** because it feels infinately better than the s4, the miata **** will obviously fit.
Soooooo you either did one of three things. [a] got a running s5 and swapped an s4 interior but kept the s5 shift **** [b] just chose to run an s5 **** on an s4 for it's high performance capabilities (it isn't too unlikely, this is Icemark I wouldn't be surprized if he comes back and tells us the s5 **** is made of space shuttle strength carbon and cuts .00042323 seconds off your lap times while wighing 37 grams less... according to mazda insiders) [c] did the miata short shift mod

ah man, do I need to go through this again... I have only covered this like 20 times in the last 4 years....
Again it is a stock S5 shifter, using a stock NB (Miata) **** in that picture (although right now the same exact shifter has a RX-8 **** on it- those pictures are from 3 or 4 years ago). The S5 shifter rod is exactly the same as the S4 except that the width of the rod is smaller (sized for the 90+ Mazda's) and black in the upper section.
There is hardly anything that is S5 in my interior (a few trims), but I would never use the S5 shift ****. It feels like crap...
Same exact shifter rod in this car:
and you can see there is plenty of room between the shifter and the tray.

I moded a cupholder out of an Altima myself but, I needed a short throw to keep from smashing my fingers on it. Another cupholder thread here:

Btw, how the hell is that thing not broken. I barely touched mine and it snapped.

My cup holders
$4.95 at most any auto parts store. I got mine at Pep Boys. It's design is to go into the door window channel. But, it's so flexible, it slides right under the shifter bezel.
Best part is it will hold most any size cup, including a slot for the coffee mug handle. As you see, there is room for a second cup, albeit I use it for holding my cell phone or other odds and ends.
You just have to remember to flip it up when ever you slide the passenger seat forward. Come in black, blue, and tan so you can color coordinate. I've used it in my 1st and 2nd gen.

I just bought a new one off ebay for a 92 Thunderbird SC cup holder(20.00 shipping included) like Icemark has in his car. I will post pics when I install it.
