Thumbs down Is Crutchfield lying to me?

I have been looking for a dual DIN radio for my 1989 Vert. I went to crutchfield, to shop, and it tells me all the dual din units do not fit. The only larger than single DIM units are these touchscreen units that are out of my price range.

I know the factory radios are dual DIN, so why wouldn't an afermarket one fit?

They will fit - you just have to be creative. I just put an Alpine ilx-w650 in my 90 vert. See attached pics.
The little bar on the bottom, covering up the space between radio and bottom of console, is a piece of AFX slot car track - I just measured and used a carpenters knife (kept scoring it).

Physically, it will fit. Crutchfield is probably saying there isn't a "Direct fit" that will work. I just bought a Pioneer DMH-2660NEX and it wired in just fine, but I have to make a custom bracket to hold it in.

The normal Metra plastic adapter kits don't really work all that well. The unit is either too far rearward or too far forward and IMO looks like dog doo.

If you have your old dual din unit laying around you can reuse the metal brackets that mount it in. Or try to use the flimsy metra kit or try and use a dual din sleeve/cage that is a universal fit. I went the option of making my own bracket because I wanted a really flush fit that looks professional.

Thanks for the info guys. Do you have any shots of these brackets you used? I do not have any aftermarket dual din radios to scavenge parts from, but I do have the non working factory radio, and I believe it has a few tabs on it.

I read through the sticky and was surprised I didn't see more or any info on this.

I don't have a picture of the new brackets, I am currently machining those. But here are some reference pictures of the old dual DIN brackets. For reference, the front most screw hole is 40mm away from the front face.of the radio.

Don't have any pictures, but the factory brackets screw into each side of the OEM radio unit, and have the tabs/holes that are used to mount the whole thing into the dash. You'll want to unscrew those old brackets off the OEM radio, and reuse them on the new radio. If you're super lucky, your new radio will have threaded holes on both sides that actually line up with holes in the brackets that result in a nice flush install in the dash. If not, you'll just need to play with it a bit to figure out where you need to drill new holes in the brackets to line up with the threaded holes your new radio has. To deal with any gaps between the new radio face and the dash trim, you may need to get creative with sheet plastic/metal to fabricate a trim ring, or maybe find a suitable trim ring that comes as part of a 2DIN universal install kit

Just wanted to show you guys an update of my newly machined radio brackets.

I machined them from 3003 aluminum and added holes to match the "M" marks on the side of my Pioneer DMH-2660NEX. I designed it so that the front face of the radio is flush with the front of the plastic center console.

You uhh... Interested in making another set of those? Even without the holes in the side so I can DIY those depending on which deck I end up with.

I'm not advertising that, but I would certainly make you one if you don't mind being a guinea pig. PM me and we'll work something out.
