crunchy 2nd

ok well my gear box has a really crunchy 2nd gear and i dont no what it could be i did a oil change in the gear box about a week ago to see if it makes any different but it didnt really. Someone told me it could be the master or slave cylinder not working properly and not engaging the clutch properly but its only really 2nd that does it. ooh sometime when you try to go into reverse (from a stop) it wont let you and you have to go forward a bit and then put it in reverse, are these problems a gear box problem or clutch problems

make sure your shifter bushings aren't destroyed. the crunching is probably a syncro problem with the tranny.

yeah. one is white and the other is probably blue. you can get to them by removing the shifter from the tower.

+1

Sounds like your bushing might be toast and the pieces are stuck in the housing in such a way that the shifter is crushing them everytime you hit second. I'd pull it apart and check that before jumping straight to tranny problems. All you gotta do is take the three 10mm bolts out and pull out the shifter. Shine a flashlight down there and dig out any pieces of bushing you find.

Or your synchros are shot

ok i pulled the shifter out doesnt seem to be any damage anywhere that i can see. i have a question thou on the bottom of the shifter there is a ball with sits in a hole on top of the gear box well is that ball meant to a have a bushing cos it has nothing on it and to me it seems silly.

That doesn't make any sense...
Why would a bushing affect just 2nd gear?

I think your 2nd gear synchro is fucked.
It's typical cause idiots who do redline shifts from 1st to 2nd will always crunch.
It's due to the fact that 1st and 2nd gear are very wide.
It's basically due to abuse.

Easy way to test...
If you know how to rev match, then this should eliminate the crunch totally.
Or, if you don't know how to rev match, just shift slightly slower and this should minimize or eliminate the problem.

well mate i shift from first 2 second pretty much at about 3 - 3.5. and 2nd is also crunchy coming back from 3rd. For the abuse part i dont no what the last bloke did to the car or how he treated it but i look after and dont abuse it. im just trying to work out what is wrong with the geat box and trying to avoid a rebuilt of the gear box

So is the meant to be a bushing on the end or not

I didn't mean to imply you were doing something wrong.
If anything, I think previous owner(s) abused the trans.

and 2nd is also crunchy coming back from 3rd.
Downshift from 3rd down to 2nd?
Are you rev matching?
If it's crunching and you're just forcing it in, it sure sounds like the 2nd gear synchro is dying.

If the bushing is bad, it's always good to replace it.
It's a question if this will fix your 2nd gear crunching...which I doubt it'll fix.

If you do run a turbo FC trans and the 2nd gear is bad, the only way to fix it is to rebuild it.
The turbo FC trans is stout, and if gears are bad, it's been abused.
