cricket in my s4

Please to who ever answers to my post DO NOT start with " research before you post". apparently it bothers a few here and if we really get down to it pretty much every topic has been discussed before at some point in time so lets get over that and just enjoy our rx7s.

anyway....my S4 has a chirp or continuos beep (not very loud though) that is driving me crazy. it stops chirping frequently but for the most part it is audible and anoying. read the FAQ but it refers to other symptoms.

Can someone help me kill that cricket underneath the dash please

David

Is it a beep or is it something squeeking inside your dash? If its a beep it could be any number of things. My car did the same thing when my power steering pump was dying.

better way to describe it is a chirping sound and it is coming from underneath the steering column. no lights are on but tomorrow i am going to check fluids AGAIN see what happens.

Is this like a japanese revenge....make the americans go crazy....

there is a small aluminum box close to where the front driver side speaker is...it seems to be coming out of there....

THE MISTERY CONTINUES............

Directly underneath the steering column? That's the p/s computer. Time to look at the FAQ again, neh?

I really thought i started this thread by asking people that if there contribution to it was to just get hung up to the fact that the answer might lie somewhere in this forum to just skip this one and go to the next.

and i have read the FAQ leigh but apparently you did not read my explanation or simply did not understand it.

IT IS NOT A BEEP BEEP BEEP SOUND it is a continuos chirping without pauses. it might come from the p/s computer but since it is not described in the FAQ well i just had this crazy idea of asking someone here.

now again for the those others that wrote back thanks for trying to help.....and will still appreciate any further help.

so I think then its coming from the p/s comp so what can i do??

thanks

david

Something I didn't clarify - I was at Leigh's yesterday and that was me posting under his handle.

I *understood* that you said that it was not the usual pattern. That was very clear. However, the source that you indicated (box under the steering column) IS the p/s computer, and in 3 years of mulling around on this forum I have yet to read of the p/s alarm doing anything other than the patterns described in the FAQ.

Who knows, you may have discovered a new warning signal. Or maybe your buzzer, or whatever circuit controls it, is just in the middle of dying.

Have you ever had the p/s computer's circuit board checked for cold or broken solder points?

And you did see smiley after my FAQ remark, right?

To find cold solder joints, you'll have to go over the board with a magnifying glass. I took all the boards in my 7 to a local electronics shop where the guy checked them all at a workbench right behind the counter (and right in front of me.) $5 a board, and he found at least one broken joint on each of them.

This guy is AMAZING with electronics (has fixed everything I've taken to him) and I wouldn't trust my own eyes to review the boards. My point here is that I'd urge you to take the boards to someone who has plenty of experience...

the wiring in my car is really dry and brittle and alot of it is F***ed up. my door ajar beep (or that what i think it was) would go off every once in a while, sounding like a dying animal, and then just stop for no appearent reason. Maybe look in that direction. Its a known fact that the wiring sucks in these cars. just look for anything that could beep???? i dont think that helps but maybe?!?!?!

Was it a single continuous tone? Coming from your gauges? If so, it's a warning buzzer mounted at the top-center of the circuit board behind those gauges. It can go off for a number of reasons. Mine was so loud I couldn't drown it out with the stereo unless I CRANKED the volume.

I eventually just ripped the buzzer right out of the board - it was that or drive the car off a cliff.

Gotta disagree there. The wiring doesn't suck. The circuit boards assembly sucks gopher *****, and stock electrical grounding sucks gopher *****, too. But not the wiring. Wires is wires. Now, our wires being up to 18 years old is another thing, but they certainly didn't leave the factory in substandard condition...
