Couple a Q's and I expect some A's
First off I talked to a Racing Beat guy over e-mail and he said that the cat replacement pipe would give the same horsepower gain on my 87 n/a as headers. I have the full racing beat exhaust for the N/a on there now. Sounded right to me. My question is would I need a presilencer for the replacement cat-pipe like i would the headers. Or no? My parts came in at the dealership so they will be on shortly(passenger side mirror and "window reveals") so I am ready to place an order at racing beat. Which would be the cat-replacemetn pipe(unless you think the headers would be better for some reason) and I would like to get an air filter or intake whatever. Would like to get a high quality low priced one from racing beat in the same order so would the K&N be the best choice? Sorry bout the length boys.

huh?
As far as the air filter goes, K&N makes some nice stuff. Different cone filters all seem to give pretty much the same HP gain, so I wouldn't worry about which one to get too much -- just find one that looks cool and is washable
As far as the headers, etc. go...
If you take out the cat it will make the car a lot louder than if you install the RB headers -- think of the cat as another muffler of sorts. So, if you were interested in getting the midpipe, i'd get a silenced one.

Here's your answer. I expect $50 in my paypal account by tomorrow morning.
1. Headers will produce a much larger power gain that a simple downpipe. In either case, you don't need a presilencer, but your eardrums will thank you if you get one.
2. All intake kits are pretty much the same. Just get the AFM adapter from ReTED, and use the filter of your choice.

Filters? All performance ones perform the same damn function. You won't see much of a difference from one cone filter to another. There's a nice set going on ebay for about $20 which includes the air filter and adaptor.
With regards to your exhaust, you have a couple of choices
a) if you get the header, you have to get the presilencer. The header is longer than the stock manifold, so it will not bolt onto the cat. With the presilencer, you can bolt the header and presilencer directly to your racingbeat catback
b) you can stay with your stock manifold, and get a Bonez racing pipe ($150, but no emissions) or a bonez hi-flo cat (about $300, but comes with a catalytic converter).
headers will give you a nicer power gain (not a HUGE difference from option B, but a decent one) ... however, you may not be on the legal side of emissions.
