A couple of Exhaust Questions

First off, I am thinking I will just have an exhaust shop make a straight pipe instead of the main cat. Reason being is that I swapped a J-Spec S5 TII into my S4 N/A. The J-Spec DP is a few inches longer than than the N/A one and it is pushing my exhaust back a few inches and causing all sorts of squeaking and rubbing. I am thinking that a shorter straight pipe instead of the cat would be an easy and inexpensive fix. There are no emissions here. Will this cause any problems?

Also, what do I do with the tube bit that connects from the airpump to the cat? Can I just take off the pipe and leave the other bit open, or should I clamp it shut?

Lastly, who knows the difference in sizing between the N/A cat-back piping and the turbo cat-back piping?

IMO you should

since there is no emissions remove the air pump, run a full 3 inch exhaust from the j spec downpipe to a muffler of your choice.

That will probably be after winter, but in the meantime I am just going to have to use the stock exhaust. I am wondering if it is going to make an impact on the flow and the noise of the car by just deleting the cat? It's a little noisy now, but that is because it is leaking because it isn't properly connected and I have the pipe going to the cat removed.

it will be loud but I don't know how unbearable when it's on the stock exhaust. The piping diameter on the NA is significantly smaller but I'm not sure what effects this will have on the performance of the car. Maybe more boost spikes?

If you have no emmissions then get some block-off plates and remove the airpump. When you do that you'll either need a pulley or the yoohoo belt from pineapple racing (they recommend their yoohoo belt over a pulley for belt tensioning issues and it's MUCH cheaper)

Alright, well I dropped it off at the shop and we'll see how it works out. I clamped off the pipe going to the cat from the air pump. Will that be a problem? I will remove the air-pump as soon as I can get a block-off plate and either the dual pulley or the yoohoo belt.

Holy cow, I cannot believe removing the stupid cat makes it so friggen loud. I am almost embarrassed to drive as it sounds like a Civic with a fart cannon up to about 3.5k rpms, but from there up it sounds like nothing I have ever heard. My last two Rx7's had the stock exhaust with just hollowed out cats and they didn't sound anything like this. At idle it sound pretty bad *** from the rear, but my wife is not going to come with me anymore...although it may be a good way to convince her to get the Rev II from RB .

Anyone know if there is a problem with clamping the line from the Airpump to where the cat was?

so it's a Downpipe, midpipe and stock exhaust? can you get a sound clip?

I assume regina (sounds like vagina ) is in Canadia so I don't know if you're willing to do this BUT i have a 55mm HKS CATBACK that I put on my old turbo (it's on the NA now) that I can sell you 300 plus shipping and I didn't think it was that loud. I took it to the police station to write off a LOUD EXHAUST ticket (I had the SSAutochrome 3" DP, Midpipe and catback) and the cop looked at the HKS, heard it and signed it off.

one thing I have to correct:

the Civics sound like FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT
The rotary sounds like BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP *pop* BRaaaaaaaaaaaaP

two distinct sounds but I agree about the LOUDNESS of it.

Yeah, it's the stock downpipe off of J-spec engines so no cats, but not quite a real DP going to a test pipe going to stock N/A Catback :S.

Yes it rhymes with Vagina and does happen to be almost exactly the lower middle of Canada...which is why I'm sure they called it Re-Ji-nah instead of Re-gee-nah like all the other places. Thanks for the offer, but I am on a tight budget as we are looking to buy our first house...but this may be loud enough to make me change my mind.

I'll try and take a video on my digital cam, but quality may not be so good, but worth a shot.

naw, I figured I'd offer in case you needed it. and I was under the impression it was RE-GEEE-NA and I was just giving you crap, kinda like how I always call it canadia.

Good luck with the house and it doesn't matter about video quality I just wanna hear how LOUD it is.

Well here it is as well as a pic of the car. Unfortunately, it is a short clip as there were some neighbors looking as it was and I try to be a good neighbor .

sounds like old torn up mufflers. replace the two mufflers either with a new catback or putting some borla or magnaflows.

Good job on the budget exhaust.

haha ya that sounds like **** I just bought a civic daily driver with a fart can and that is embarrassing to drive around campus so I know what you mean. I would definitely not cheap out and just buy the racing beat full exhaust. I have their full exhaust on my NA and it sounds nice, pretty quiet at idle and bellow 3.5K

Yeah, well RB turbo back exhaust in Canada here is about $1000 plus tax. I got the mid pipe for a cheap way to fix the exhaust leak and the squeaking from the cat-back exhaust being pushed back 3 inches so I guess you get what you pay for and I shouldn't complain. A house comes before new exhaust as I still have to face reality and being married, but I am still very happy my wife let me take on this project. I'll find a good, used exhaust system in the spring provided I don't run into any stop-checks

Yeah, they are starting to fall apart. Come spring time, I will try to pickup a good, used cat-back.

And honestly, that video doesn't give you half as loud as they really are...it's pretty bad. I am trying to go nice and slow everywhere I go so I don't feel like an idiot.
