Count down to D-Day (Project GTUs)

Hello all. The time has come for me to start the final count down thread for project GTUs. The project roughly started over a year ago (02-06-2003) with a thought, here is the original post:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...t=Project+GTUs
Since then I have done several updates:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=167914
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=190025
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=185530

To make a long story short in the passing time (February 2003 till now) project GTUs has gone thought several changes. It started with a TII conversion, and then I ran out of ambition/cash. I then got a S5 GXL parts car to return her back to stock, but after further inspection the motor was not usable, hehe my fiancé was pleased with that one (but at least I made my money back and a little more). With the cash from the parts car and some hard work (lots of over time at work and generally whoreing my self out) I decided there was no turning back, I had to finish the TII conversion.

Over this time I have cleaned up the car, re-painted the engine bay, re-painted mic brackets, replaced rubber hoses/lines, polished parts, powder coated parts, and just the other weekend I built the motor. Other than waiting on a few more parts to come in she is ready to fire up!!! I am looking to make D-Day Sat the 15th. This conversion is definitely more costly than people realize. To be honest if I were to do it over again I would do it one of two ways. One chose an S4 due to the better selection/availability of parts. Two use a stand alone EMS cutting more than ½ of the parts I had to find and or buy new out of the picture. Ok enough of the “woe is me I spent lots of money on my car” whining and on to the specs

The major items that were bought for the conversion:

- Used S5 side housings (this took several cores to get a full set, ha J-Spec no Junk-Spec yes )
- Brand new S5 rotor housings (my Visa bill still hurts from this one)
- S4 rotors (lower compression for more reliability and so I can wick up the boost )
- Rats nest and other vacuum lines re-zinc coated
- Brand new S5 TII engine harness (Wow that wasn’t cheap)
- TMIC polished (still needs to be finished)
- Front cover polished
- CAS polished
- Slew of new water lines, clips, bolts, brackets, sensors, etc. (This is where a stand alone would have cut the cost)
- Cleaned/balanced/tested stock TII injectors for primaries
- Greddy 720cc injectors for secondary
- S5 Turbo re-built and upgraded by Turbonetics (details to follow shortly)
- Upper and lower intake manifold powder coated gloss black with super dust II
- HKS SSQV (Thanks TeamGTUs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
- Racing Beat SS oil lines
- Racing Beat dual pulley system (main and alt pulleys)
- Mazdatrix SS clutch line
- SR Motorsports 9.5lb flywheel
- ACT SS clutch
- S5 N/A trans (for now till I can find a S5 TII drivetran in good shape)

After changing providers I have been slowly working on the TeamGTUs web site. In the gallery I have made a folder of all the pics I have of Project GTUs. I will be updating those pictures the weekend everything goes together. You can view them here http://www.teamgtus.com/gallery/

I will up date this tread as the GTUs moves closer to D-Day.

Thanks for the kind words. I can't wait to drive my car again .

Beefhole:
RarestRX and I were doing a picture session that day. There should be some pics of his car in the same corner taken by me . Soon we will do another togue/picture day now that my car will be running again.

After break in I will have to install some more parts so I can dial it in safely on the dyno. But for now I will be happy she is running under her own power

I am waiting on:

- Mic. Gaskets, hoses small Mazda parts. According to the tracking # should be here Thursday.
- The pair of 720cc injectors. Again according to the tracking # Thursday as well.
- The upper and lower intake manifold and water pump housing should be back from the powder coater middle of next week.
- The turbo was just received by Turbonetics yesterday. Probably not going to get that back until middle to late next week.
- The stock injectors just got to Cruzin performance yesterday as well. Looking at about a week turn around on those.

I am just in a hold pattern right now for parts.

Dude, that's the last thing Dana wants to do! He's already done like 4 tranny drop/installs last month!!

Heh.

His car will be sweet.

Once he finally gets it dialed in, we'll have a Thunderhill Supah Battle!!

Silkworm vs. RarestRX
Rotary Racer vs. Rotorlution

Who will win?!

Hehehe yeah lets not get on the subject of transmission installs I think my garage permanently smells like redline mt-90.

A Thunder Hill battle will definitely have to happen, But something tells me my car will be done and broke in way before Rotorlution, hahaha. So I guess I will have to take on the winner of the RarestRX Vs. Silkworm battle.

Oh it’s 1:50 time to call Turbonetics

Yep, still running RA-1s, I'll be getting a GTUs 5th gear in my new tranny, and hopefully soon will have 4.88s

The car is looking great Dana!

BTW, how much is a new engine wiring harness? I want to get a new one for my next project since I want it to run perfect with the Microtech.

Thanks. If you get a Microtech you will not need to buy a new engine harness. Lets just say the new harness was more than I wanted to spend

- Dana "Wiring harness cost = 1.5 new rotor housings"

2 line items down 3 left to go. I got the 720cc injectors and gaskets in just a min ago. I can feel the gas mileage going down as we speak.

sweet. I was in a holding pattern as well until I got my turbo and injectors back.

It only took 3 nights to get it put together and ready after that.

I'm kind of with you. I have a 88 GTU TII conversion

Ok, well time for an update . D-Day has been postponed due to parts not getting here on time. I am very upset and disappointed in the lack of customer service these days. I will just leave it at that.
