could bad injectors be my problem?

car starts EVERYTIME, but will not hold an idle ...
88Turbo II with no emissions
s5 upper and lower intake, s5 turbo and manifold

at first i assumed it was the AFM, as it wouldnt start with it plugged in .. i unplug it and it starts and then dies ...

i replaced it with an AFM from an 87 TII, and now it starts everytime, but wont idle ...
ive messed with all the stuff relating to the idle...
the tps is probally shot, but that shouldnt make it not stay started at all from what ive read .. ive checked and changed the fuel filter, and gas flowed just fine ...

the only other thing i can think it would be is the injectors ..

when i start it it will start just fine, and rev up nicely ... and will stay started as long as i keep my foot on the gas ... but when i let go it will just keep falling in RPM until it stalls out ...

the injectors sat in my garage for over a year, but we checked them for the ticking noise by putting voltage to it ... and they all clicked, but somenoe said they did that as well, and it turned out to be the injectors after all ..

so thats my question ... do you think it could be my injectors?

It sounds like a vacuum leak.

yeah i know, but it would have to be a huge vaccum leak to keep the car from staying started ....

i asked what possibly could be causeing a leak that huge (ie, what part, etc...) noone felt like responding ...

someone mentioned they wer having the same problem as me, and cleaning the injectors worked... im just seeing if anyone else has had issues like this

Did it run like this before changing the manifolds? Did you use new gaskets? TID cracked? Is your AFM level? If you can wedge something at the throttle to keep it close to idle grab a can of carb cleaner and start spraying. If the engine surges you have found the leak.

the only place we could find a leak was at the uim/lim joint. the long (s5 specific) bolt was missing from his manifolds. that was a leak and the idle did go up from spraying starter fluid on the flanges. it almost felt like starter fluid was the ONLY thing keeping the car going. this ones hard to me. i COULD be the injectors. . . i havent checked the car since the bolt has been put in. i hope this clears up soon. . . its screwin with my head.

Have you adjusted the variable resistor? Mine dies in about 5 seconds without it set right.

Look for a vacuum leak that is most likely the cause of all your problems.

Could be the grommets on the injectors, did you replace them when you replaced the manifolds?

everytime someone says this , and i ask ... what could possibly be that big to leak enough to keep the car from staying started??? no one ever answers that ..

vaccum leaks cause a high idle i thought ... so to keep it from staying started at all it would have to be a huge freaking vaccum leak , no??
