Coolant getting blown out into overfill
I drove my car (88 GXL) about 30 miles then came back home. Tried to start it up about 15 minutes later and it wouldn't start unless I held the gas pedal down. WHITE smoke started blowing out the back and the distinct smell of coolant followed. Also, coolant started leaking from the overfill tank. We checked the coolant level on the cap on that one hose and it was completely empty. Engine has 160k miles on it. Do I need to start shopping for another engine?

my 86 did that about a week ago. I replaced the water pump and the thermostate. Also bleed the system to get air outta it. If that doesnt work it could be a blown coolant seal.

Unless there is an internal/external leak, there is no reason to bleed air out of the system. Air appears if coolant is displaced, simple. If you will her up at the T-stat filler neck with the air bleeder screw out, there will be no air in the system. At least thats what I found. Filled it once till coolant came out of the screw, then tightened it up and put the cap on. Filled up the coolant bottle and that was the last time I ever had to add coolant.
Before that my TII housing jackets were leaking coolant due to a shitty seal job, I always thought it was air in the system becuase after the coolant buzzard always came on. Ever since I tapped and sealed the jackets, never had the buzzer go off on me.

Sounds like finished coolant seals to me. The billowing smoke is most likely burning coolant, and the fact it is being displaced into the overflow tells me there is combustion chamber compression getting into the cooling system.
Rebuild time or new engine time. Just think...you can get that turbo 2 youve always wanted (you know you want it)
