coolant flush/fill procedure

i flushed/filled the coolant and this being the first time i had ever done it i used my trusty hanes manual. so i do like it says and take out the air bleeder plug, drain plug, and block drain plug, wait till its empty, take the hose to it for about 15 mins (water runs good and clear), put the drain plug and block plug back in, fill it with 50/50 antifreeze/water till it just starts coming out the bleeder whole, put the bleeder plug back on, and whats this? it wants me to run the car w/o the filler cap on till the thermostat turns on and the upper coolant pipe gets hot. DOES THAT SEEM LIKE A BAD IDEA TO ANYONE ELSE? im thinking.. hrrmm..if the thermostat opens, that will send blazing hot coolant through the currently uncapped upper pipe right?? but i figure the manual has to be smarter than i am and i start her up and patiently wait for this pipe to get hot. i waited for a couple of minutes and i remember turning my back for a second after checking the pipe (still cool) and i hear this 'gurgle..splash.. splash.. gurgle' noise and right away im afraid to look. low and behold i turn around and yep, coolant is spewing, steaming and bubbling, out of the filler. so i turned the car off, at which point coolant continued to boil and sputter out of the filler. now if i had been standing there waiting for that ******* pipe to get hot or even close to the car for that matter, there is a good chance that I would have been VERY badly burned. not a good thing. anyhow i waited a while for the car to cool again, filled it up till it just came out of the bleeder plug again, put the plug back in, ran it until the first squirt out of the filler cap, then filled it up to the neck of the filler and capped her, works like a charm, temp gauge stays at about 1/4 the way up. the point of this post is, did they actually tell me to do something that could cause great personal injury, or did i miss something in translation? anyone?

Well that does seem pretty bad.....
But to get any bubbles out of the system it is the best way to do as the haynes says...

How much coolant did you end up adding? Gallons?

psh, nah only like half a bottle. so prolly close to a gallon with the water. there really isn't as much coolant in the engine as you'd think there would be. ill check it tomorrow to see if i need to add any but the temp was fine on the 30 min drive thru town home.
