Convertible Window regulator.

Hey guys , my 91 vert had the passenger window regulator that was fubar. I took the door apart and found that the nylon guide at the top of the track had cracked allowing the UP cable to slack and fall into the guide for the DOWN cable.

I epoxyed the broken piece back in place and drilled a pilot hole through the nylon guide and the aluminum track and srcrewed all 3 pieces together with a sheet metal screw and then cut off the excess of the screw.

I also had to rewind the cables and the spring inside the motor and cleaned an greased everything.

The window goes up and down very smooth and fast. I have tested it about 50 times and a few times put my hand on the top of the glass to add resistance and still is good.

I took apart the other door of the still good regulator, drilled and added the reinforcing screw and greased everything as preventive maintenance.

I saw the price of the vert regulators and sure as **** wasn't about to buy one!

The fix is not pretty but it's strong and it works. I drilled and put the screw in the thickest meat of the nylon.

I had looked into having the guides made, because thats the only thing that goes bad

I know they would get a min. order, but I never pursued it

I'm sure the dealer never sold the guides separately

The guides should have been stamped steel with nylon inserts for the cables to ride in.

Thanks for the post, as my passenger window just died out. If you have any more pics, that would be great. I will be ripping my door open this weekend or next, pending on the weather.

No, the best thing would have been a nylon pulley like the manual regulators have. The manual and the vert regulators are similar, but the manual has the pulley to reduce friction. I guess the designers assumed the friction was no big deal for the motorized version in the vert. They failed to note that the friction and strain would eventually cause the guide to fail.

I replaced my fubar'd passenger side guide with a pulley taken from the manual regulator (pick-n-pull $5). It works great and will not wear out, unlike the original or any replacement guide.

I don't have a pic of the vert unit replaced, but here is a pic of the manual unit. Note the similarity to the vert as it is cable driven. See that pulley at the top of the track?

Doesn't matter, it is not a direct replacement; It's a transplant, so either side pulley will work. You have to drill out the pulley bushing from the back of the manual regulator, drill a mounting hole in the vert regulator; then bolt in the pulley.

Don't forget your locktite!

I did mine over 3 years ago. I have had zero issues since.
